What happens if I don't rinse my cans and bottles before recycling?​

General

Is there anyone working in the environment or recycling industry (in Singapore) who can share - do we really have to rinse our cans and bottles before throwing them into the recycling bins?

Most times these bins are not located near a sink. If I finish my drink and come across a bin, which is the lesser evil?

1. Throw the unrinsed can/bottle (maybe with just a few drops of drink inside) into the recycling bin
2. Throw into general waste bin

Of course ideally one should rinse and then throw into recycling bin. But I wonder how many would bother to actually do so.
