Sketchy behaviour by someone in the nature community
am a university student who is also involved in nature activities in singapore. this incident has been bothering me for over a year but i’ve always downplayed it. now i feel like i really want to get this off my chest, and also warn other young students in the nature community (especially females) to be careful in the likely chance they encounter this person (Mr S). The scene is really small and he is a lecturer.
around a year ago i took a taxi with Mr S to an event, and in the middle of the ride he suddenly held my hand, lacing his fingers with mine. he held my hand like this for a long time and did not let go. i was taken aback and scared so did not react immediately, just slowly pulled away after quite some time. note that there has been nothing between us, we have just been friends (with a big age gap) who catch up once in a while.
after this incident i distanced myself from S and stopped meeting him one on one. while nothing else happened i felt that this encounter was very uncomfortable for me. perhaps it was nothing to him but i still find it difficult to let go of this incident. knowing that S tends to hang out with female students, i would like to share my story and encourage youths in the nature community to trust your gut feeling if things do not feel right, and be more cautious when hanging out one on one with men, even if it is a trusted mentor. thanks for reading!
