Viewing houses to buy my first resale hdb and saw a really nice unit yesterday. The only drawback is that there is a strong Indian spice smell once I step into the house that's stopping me from buying.

Is it ever possible to remove the smell? I'm afraid that the smell may penetrate deep into the house/carpentry and it would cost me a bomb to renovate the whole place.

Those who tenanted out your house to Indians before, did you manage to remove the smell? Is professional deep cleaning sufficient?

My worries:

-Flooring was vinyl, do I need to hack them -Wooden carpentry. Wood is porous so I suspect smell might penetrate deep -Aircon, will I need to replace the whole aircon? -what else should I take note of?

Please be objective. I'm only objectively asking for solutions and no mean comments please.

Fellow curry house hold here….

We cook curries, biriyani, most of the days. While cooking we keep the hood on with 1-2 speed and continue to run it for 20-30 mins after cooking so it clears the smell. It’s also important to allow cross ventilation while cooking so we keep windows and main door open. Wife wanted a humidifier with essential oils. It was indeed a good idea . So we don’t have any curry smells in the house even after cooking daily for 5 plus years along with deep cleaning the kitchen everyday .

If there’s any fabric furniture in the house, remove them .
Change all the aircons . Repaint your house with a double coat and this should solve most of your problems .
