New low, the mods from R/Singapore banned me from posting there for a comment I posted on r/ Singaporeraw, on the news of the death of the 6 years old girl. Why are they so sensitive to comments on the arrested individual? They are watching you. Report here: https://redditinc.com/policies/moderator-code-of

I never understood why so many people ended up on those platforms in the first place. I've always been here through thick and thin putting up with all sorts of dumb comments... even tolerating absolute morons like that loser who calls himself @winners. :D

Nobody gets censored here they just get reprimanded and ridiculed when they step out of line.

SBF is the best. However, if this site attracts the wrong people and never get them banned and censored, one might not know if they are talking something real or talking shits

A 38-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with a fatal road accident that took place along South Bridge Road in Singapore's Chinatown district on 6 February, 2026.

According to the Singapore Police Force (SPF), the incident occurred at approximately 11:50am, involving a car that struck two pedestrians—a six-year-old girl and a 31-year-old woman—believed to be the child’s mother.
The mother-and-daughter pair have been reported as tourists from Indonesia.
Both were transported conscious to hospital. However, the girl later succumbed to her injuries.

The driver, initially reported to be cooperating with police inquiries, has now been arrested, as confirmed by SPF to local media on 8 February.

The incident occurred near the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, a well-frequented area close to Maxwell MRT station.
The scene attracted multiple bystanders, some of whom were seen offering aid and shelter to the victims using umbrellas, as captured in videos circulating on social media.

Eyewitness describes sequence of events

An eyewitness, Nguyen Thi Hanh, who claimed to have been walking behind the victims at the time, shared a harrowing account of the accident.

Nguyen stated that the car emerged from a car park beside the temple and allegedly failed to check for pedestrians on the right side before making a turn. She claimed the driver only checked traffic from the left.

According to her statement, the car’s front wheel ran over the child’s abdomen, followed by the mother’s leg. She further alleged that the driver then accelerated, causing the rear wheel to roll over the mother’s abdomen as well.

Nguyen described the aftermath as deeply distressing. She said the girl was thrown and landed face-down in a pool of blood, with visible bleeding from her mouth. She recalled seeing the child’s water bottle and a small camera lying nearby.

Five minutes later, she said, the bleeding intensified. Another bystander, Hannah Đặng, reported seeing the child’s father arrive and hold her while pleading for help.

Updated witness account raises concerns

In a follow-up post, Nguyen added further details, clarifying that her initial statement had been abridged due to time constraints.

In her revised account, she claimed that the driver appeared unaware she had hit someone and did not stop immediately.

Instead, Nguyen alleged, the driver continued moving the vehicle, exacerbating the injuries. She further reported that upon exiting the car, the driver became defensive, raising her voice and stating that she was not at fault.

Nguyen also described a tense exchange between the driver and the child’s grieving father at the scene.

She has publicly expressed her willingness to assist in the ongoing investigation, stating her readiness to provide testimony if required.

What will the citizen do? will they rise up to discipline the govt and raise this policy issue? or just sit back like a ball-less useless sinkie.
Words of wisdom but sadly heeded by none, more bothered with hawker fare, bubble tea and annual holidays to Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and China, long queues BTO etc

Probable outcomes of the Chinatown Road Fatality: An Analysis

Photo source: Stomp.sgr/SingaporeRaw - Photo Source: Stomp.sg Photo Source: Stomp.sg

Sharing what I ran through via Gemini - and I've included some details shared by the alleged Vietnamese lady on her facebook post as influencing factors. Of course this is by no means a legal analysis but they can give a general direction on what the outcome might be if some of the eye witness accounts/details turn out to be true and mitigating factors:

1. The Charges (The "What")

The driver was arrested for "Driving without reasonable consideration causing death" (Section 65 of the Road Traffic Act).
  • The Baseline: For a first-time offender, this carries a maximum of 3 years in jail, a $10,000 fine, and a minimum 8-year driving ban.
  • Multiple Charges: Since the mother was also injured, the driver will likely face a second charge for causing grievous hurt (up to 2 years' jail). Under the "Totality Principle," the judge will decide if these sentences run together (concurrently) or back-to-back, but the presence of two victims almost always pushes the total sentence higher.

2. High Culpability Factors (The "Why")

Alleged eyewitness accounts mentioned - if true - are "aggravating factors" that make a jail term almost certain:
  • The "Double Impact": Running over the victims a second time is the most damaging evidence. The court expects a driver to stop immediately upon impact. Accelerating after the first hit suggests either "gross negligence" or "rashness," which can lead the prosecution to upgrade the charge to Dangerous Driving (up to 8 years' jail).
  • One-Way Lookout: The driver's failure to look right in a high-traffic zone (Chinatown) is a clear breach of the "duty of care." Singapore law holds that drivers in pedestrian-heavy areas must exercise "extraordinary vigilance."
  • Vulnerable Victim: Because the deceased is a child, the "public interest" for a deterrent sentence is at its highest. Courts rarely grant only a fine when a young child is killed due to a driver's failure to look.

3. Recent Legal Changes (The 2025/2026 Context)

As of June 2025, Singapore removed "mandatory minimum" jail terms for first-time negligent drivers to give judges more flexibility.
  • However, this flexibility is meant for "minor mistakes" (e.g., a pedestrian stepping out from a blind spot).
  • The "Serious Offender" Tier: Because of the severity (two victims, multiple impacts), the driver may be classified as a Serious Offender. This adds a mandatory extra jail term (up to 2 additional years) on top of the base sentence and can extend the driving ban to 12 years or life.

4. Likely Outcome

  • Imprisonment: Given the specific aggravating factors (second impact and failure to look), a sentence of 12 to 18 months' jail is a realistic estimate based on current precedents for "high negligence."
  • Driving Ban: An 8 to 10-year ban is standard, but the "Serious Offender" tag could push this to 12+ years.
  • Nationality: The victims allegedly being tourists do not change the criminal sentence, but it significantly increases the driver's civil liability (claims for medical costs, repatriation, and loss of future earnings).
Summary in a Sentence: While the 2025 laws allow for leniency in simple accidents, the "double-impact" and failure to look in a crowded area like Chinatown likely move this case into the "Serious Offender" category, making a significant jail term highly probable.

5. Past Cases and Outcomes TLDR

In Nickson Guay (2016), a driver who failed to look while turning right, leading to an infant's death, received 4 weeks' jail and a 5-year ban. Cases with multiple victims, like Don Soh (2015), saw sentences increased to reflect the harm to survivors. More recently, in early 2026, a driver in a high-speed fatal crash received 11 years' jail, though that involved drink-driving. Without alcohol involved, but with the "double-impact" factor, this Chinatown case sits between these precedents—much higher than a few weeks, but likely under the multi-year sentences reserved for "rash" or "dangerous" driving.
