Anyone else feel like we have become a jaded society in the recent years?
GeneralI was thinking back to a time when I was young, mobile phones werent a thing, the disney movies we watched had story morals about courage or friendship or love and there was this strong idea of being a good person and a good member of society. There were cases of crime, for sure, but a vast majority of society still upheld morals and believed in being good people. There were alot of people who fought for causes in Singapore, like charities and donation drives for poverty, illnesses, climate change, major calamities. They even used to have those songs like ‘We are the world’ and there was a certain sense of idealism?
Now it feels like everyone has become selfish, all-for-themselves, theres open racism, sexism, hate (in part, perpetuated by the US and who they elected in 2016) and the prevalence of social media. People outrightly cheating on each other, hooking up without regard for anyones feelings, everyone frustrated and angry by stagnant wages and crazy prices, blaming the government and foreigners for a tougher life.
I’m feeling like noone cares about morals anymore - people do anything that makes sense as long as it benefits them. The number of people who were passionate about nature and climate change have dwindled, for example. I’ve asked around why, and a common idea is that ‘we tried, but people are polluting the world at an even fast rate, so theres nothing we can do’. Many charities are found to be corrupt, we hear about religious leaders and communities in big scandals, and it feels for many people that theres no longer any point being a good person anymore.
Do you feel like this has indeed affected the singaporean psyche tremendously, especially in the last 5 years? We’re all so much more stressed, we’re constantly comparing on social media, and morals have been thrown out the window.
