And they still don’t know why they’re so hated

translation: Hong Kong director Pang Ho-cheung once said that while watching a movie in Beijing, an older woman in front of him was talking on the phone very loudly. Pang asked her, “Could you please speak a little more quietly?” She replied, “No.” Later, a friend from Beijing told him, “If you use a question, the other person will think they have a choice. You should say, ‘Shut up!’” After that, he tried this approach repeatedly, and it never failed. This is part of the Chinese national character: they mistake politeness for weakness and distance for retreat. Chinese society is a rough-and-tumble, highly animalistic one, where everyone is scrambling for resources amid the chaos and has no time to spare for one another. Let alone considerations of personal space, distance, tact, or sensitivity. That’s why Chinese people are often disliked when they travel abroad, yet most Chinese don’t realize it or can’t figure it out. Because the Chinese mindset is so coarse that it can no longer support more nuanced logical thinking.
