I've thought it was a little odd that someone who can write better than 95% of the people I know (most of them are engineering graduates) would fall into a situation like this. (which is unheard of in my profession).
While I'm not sure about your articulation skills, but if you had taken some courses in engineering related subjects it might help you sort out your life a bit. (as they consist of mostly problem solving disciplines). The cheapest way to do it would be probably to take up a course in programming.
Anyway, writing 10,000 word essays is nothing. What's more challenging is to face a customer and answer his queries. Now that's really requires some quick thinking.
