QPR unveils plans for new 40,000-seater stadium

QPR chairman Tan Sri Tony Fernandes.

PETALING JAYA: Malaysian-owned Queens Park Rangers FC has unveiled plans for a new stadium Friday as the 131-year-old English club looks set to move from their current Loftus Road ground.

The 40,000-seater stadium is part of a major regeneration project in West London's Old Oak area, provisionally titled New Queens Park.

The cost of building the stadium is estimated at £200mil (RM1.1bil) and it is part of a £10bil (RM52.8bil) regeneration project.

QPR and its partners Stadium Capital Developments stated that they have concluded a letter of collaboration with the GLA and the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham to "bring forward an early and very significant private sector investment into the Old Oak Common regeneration area".

The stadium is at the heart of the regeneration area, and will bring about the creation of a residential and commercial area which would generate up to 50,000 jobs and 24,000 new homes.

"Loftus Road is – and always will be – a special place for the club and our supporters, but we need more than an 18,000 capacity," QPR chairman Tony Fernandes said.

"With no option of expanding here, we have to look elsewhere and we welcome the Mayor's and Hammersmith & Fulham Council's commitment to regenerate the area, which includes an option to develop a new stadium at Old Oak as a key catalyst to bring forward redevelopment, cementing our future in this part of West London," he said.

It still requires planning approval from H&F council. I'll believe it when I see it (which is probably conditional on QPR being promoted AND staying in the Premiership).

Fernandez will likely seek public listing on LSE or elsewhere to fund the new stadium. Coming soon.

They had problems filling out Loftus Road even for derby matches, and now they want to upgrade to a bigger stadium?

Another idiotic decision from Mr AirAsia again.

Or he can follow Cardiff and explore a listing on SGX. :D
