A group of psychologists and psychiatrists (led by Dr Rosenhan) pretended to be insane to be admitted into psychiatric hospitals in an experiment. During their incarceration in the hospitals where they observed and took notes of the hospital staff, all of the hospital staff were successfully tricked and none recognized the experimenters were faking their insanity, but ironically, many of the actual (ie. genuinely) insane psychiatric patients in the hospital at the time could correctly recognize that the experimenters were only faking their insanity. When the experimenters revealed the nature of the experiment to the hospital staff and asked to be released, the hospital staff went, "yeah right nice try" and forced the experimenters to take heavier anti-psychotic medication. It took the experimenters' lawyers to finally get them released.
There is an epilogue (macam Marvel post credits scene) to this experiment. A psychiatric hospital which was offended by Rosenhan's experiment challenged him to send fake patients to their hospital, and were confident they could correctly identify the fake patients. Rosenhan agreed and in the following weeks out of 250 new patients the staff identified 41 as fake patients. Rosenhan then revealed he had sent no fake patients to the hospital at all.
