In life, the path you take is entirely up to you......

Loser beng or million dollar minister and future prime minister? The choice is yours.

All rich families whose sons and daughters have got straight As no longer apply for scholarships. They understand how these things work. They now grab a few gullible idiots whose parents are hardworking and put them up as poster child to win elections. Their cohorts who also scored As are working in Silicon Valley, Boston, Canary Wharf etc and make the occasional trip for property soft launches. Just go to premium property soft launches, you can see the the wives of PAP and the establishment chaperoning their adult kids and helping to secure choice units. These are the up and coming royalty and the newly landed.

Lets face it the washer woman son routine works for the ignorant lesser educated and the gullible. Its a proven model. Its began with Mah Bow Tan and it continues to gets suckers. Here is an interesting picture.

The PAP founding fathers were all rich men's sons and the few who were not came from middle class. The homes of Raja, Goh and old man were purchased with money from their parents. You think making and selling glue during Japanese occupation paid for his house at Oxley. Raja was so hopeless with money that his father paid for his house in total after he realised that his minister son and his wife had no home of their own.

Yup. Agree with u absolutely. Classic example is a loser from S'pore who quit the country where he couldn't make it and ended up as a forum host resident in NZ.

Indeed in Singapore, bureaucracy is the new aristocracy. Where are the citizens' yachts?

EDIT: Hang on, I think you mean to say that the typical PAP man is born with a silver spoon. My apologies, I thought I read what I read.

Many in the PAP came from humble beginnings and worked their way to the top through sheer hard work and perseverance. Our future PM is a perfect example of how someone from a broken family can make good.

This is the reason why I admire the Singapore system so much. There is no glass ceiling. Everyone starts off with the same hand and the sky is the limit.

Isolated example is not proof...besides you run road to NZ already so you didn't make it in Singapore.

While Kee Chiu story is something to be admired at, frankly the statistical evidence against the Horatio Alger myth in a capitalistic system is becoming overwhelming. I am amazed at how it still holds so many poor people in its thrall, who continue to slave away creating value while only getting a pittance in return. And all the elite and rich need to do is continue to select a few willing peons to elevate once in a while and the rest will continue to slave away at it.

A wise American once said, "Socialism never took root in America because the poor see themselves not as an exploited proletariat, but as temporarily embarrassed millionaires." How right was he.

I am taken aback by the things you know. I have the impression you often rub shoulders with the elites in ivory tower. Were you ever invited by pap for tea-session before? Some of these tea sessions invites are through connections; of course the invitees have the minimum form of accomplishment.

Chan is a very animated character during his army days. Talkative and eager to impress. In war game exercises, senior commanders are slightly amused how he often use analogy and body language to make people see his points, but it works.

I flipped when I see the recent one from him -- the carrot cake analogy.. That is the worst analogy from him.

i agree with LeongSam...........................

i have the SAME EQUAL chance of being S'pore's next PM as LKY's grandson.......................

Naming him future PM... that is way over the top Sam.

That being said I disagree that everyone has an equal opportunity to the top. A janitor can never aspire to be PM, MP or business owner. Just where do you the draw the line after which one's decisions in life prevents them from rising above others? How should you keep everyone in the game of bettering their own lives?

Curious when referring to "everyone" - does this equate to everyone who is a Singaporean (Citizens and PRs included) or everyone who is in the majority race?

Many of the dominant policies from the '80s onwards were obviously skewered to the preferential opportunities for only the majority race - how is that not a glass ceiling albeit never admitted in public but often acknowledged in private?

Anbody can shed light on statistics of non-Chinese Singaporean university candidates with excellent/stellar academics who were not allowed to pursue Medicine and instead had to go abroad to study, qualify and then return to Singapore to practice (with the additional debt burden)?

Surely the system has not been egalitarian from that perspective?

only the NAIVE will believe that.

example people from a poor family make it in life , either by doing business or through studying , definitely does not mean that
everyone has an equal opportunity of success .

the conditions are there, but in REAL life , success depends on many many other factors.
