Yes: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairmont_SingaporeFairmont is ang mo brand right?
It first opened in 1986 as the Westin Plaza hotel, which was also another "angmo" brand.
But in 2001/2002, it was taken over by Raffles International, which was owned by Raffles Holdings (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raffles_Holdings), which is owned by Temasek Holdings, and renamed as Raffles The Plaza.
Which means that for a few years during the last decade, it was a "Singaporean" brand, before Raffles Holdings sold Raffles International (which also owned the famous Raffles Hotel just opposite) to the U.S. company, Colony Capital (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colony_Capital) in 2005.
Colony Capital, together with Saudi Arabia's Kingdom Holding Company (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingdom_Holding_Company), then acquired Canada's Fairmont Hotels & Resorts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairmont_Hotels_and_Resorts) and combined it with Raffles International to form Fairmont Raffles Hotels International (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairmont_Raffles_Hotels_International) in 2006.
Finally, in late 2007, Raffles The Plaza hotel had its name changed to Fairmont Singapore.
So the brand name and the owners have changed, but the building still remains the same.
Like many other "expensive" things in Singapore, Fairmont hotel is just another "expensive" thing that's owned by rich foreigners, usually Western "angmos".
Personally, I think most native Singaporeans are hardworking.
But our wealth, in terms of money, actually comes mostly from rich Western countries who are willing to invest their money in us.
That has always been the case since the British started colonizing Singapore in the 19th century, and it will continue indefinitely... *sigh*
