NEW high-rise surveillance cameras that can zoom in up to 60 times will be installed on selected buildings in the city by the end of this year.

Two of these eyes-in-the-sky cameras will be deployed on each of three "strategic buildings" in Marina Bay for a start, said a police operations department spokesman at the annual Police Workplan Seminar and Exhibition yesterday.

They will complement street-level Public Camera Zone cameras installed in more than 150 locations across the island.

While the super-zoom Hawk Eye cameras will be able to resolve faces and number plates even from up high, police said there will be "active masking" on certain angles to ensure privacy.

This is PAP-run Singapore. You never had any privacy or civil liberties to begin with.

Wow like London !! Every street corner have CCTV !! Invading ppl privacy !!!

Some HDB lifts have TWO cameras inside each of them. Two cameras in a confined space of 2 meters by 2 meters.

I'm quite sure that some crony selling security equipment gets to profit from this deal.

Good move by a good government to ensure law and order.

In UK, they kp the big brother government, in SG, they say for your own good, everybody LL accept it.

Let's hope they are not dummies.

No wonder they are able to apprehend vandals so easily. But why are they such a failure at catching the loan sharks ?

I have no problem sacrificing privacy for safety if it deters some psychotic terrorist from setting off a bomb and killing innocent people.

Using terrorist excuse to spy Singaporean life ? ;) that kind of scare tactics have already been used in America ;)

People who complained about excessive phone charges were allowed to listen to the calls that they were paying for. It was usually their maids that were making the calls.:D

If you look at past cases where security was breached e.g. the limping Mas escapee case. It was caused by negligence on the part of the PAP.

Another famous "terrorist" case was the planned attack on a MRT station. This plot was discovered by the americans in Afghanistan who warned the the PAP about the plot.

Is this why you are willing to "sacrificng" your privacy for:confused:

Mentality of a sheep.

unless we did something wrong, the sheer volume of cctv footage collected means no one is going to be able to watch it all. facial recognition software will most likely be employed instead, and this can be defeated. http://rt.com/news/glasses-block-face-recognition-544/

Oh, I know this one.
Vandals may vandalise elite property. So they will be affected.
Elites are unlikely to be affected by loansharks.
The same reasoning could apply to why it's the death penalty for kidnappers and robbers who fire shots during a robbery even though nobody dies, but usually a relatively ligher sentence when it is a gang fight or skirmish and someone dies.
