They suggested the money could go towards the country's social spending instead.

Opposition MP for Aljunied GRC Pritam Singh said that the region's security architecture and good military relations give reason to be "relatively positive about the low probability of outright military conflict breaking out in the region".

Pritam is right.

Singapore will NEVER go to war. Simply because our whole system is such that when a war breaks out we will be in a lose-lose situation.

Win the fight but still lose the war. We will economically be devastated and whole region, on which we depend on will be in ruins. We will never recover. Nothing will be the same again.

I have always advocated that our policies be neighbour friendly. Even a simple cold , with no fighting, war will bring down our gdp.

We can use the resources that fund our armies to help develop the business in the region.

Lets be clear. The exorbitant defense spending only benefits certain peoples pockets. And the dumb ones do NS.

On a daily basis you can see how packed our roads & public transport system is. Whenever there is a NDP rehearsal or APEC meeting, the road closures cause chaos. If ever we have problems with our neighbours, the mass exodus of the foreigners & Sporeans will cause the mother of all jams.
