Saw this on Mr.Brown website:
Report 1:
"NTUC director of the Unit for Contract and Casual Workers (UCCW), Mr Zainal Sapari criticised the workers for not adhering proper procedures and acting without the knowledge of the National Transport Workers' Union."
Report 2:
"The National Transport Workers' Union (NTWU) has issued a press statement on the SMRT bus drivers' dispute. The union said that it does not have the legal mandate to represent the PRC bus workers of SMRT as they are not union members."
Workers go on strike, Singapore union immediately demonise them can't even get the basic facts right...very funny but in a sense reflects the state of labor rights in Singapore.
The PRC workers came to work in Singapore. They came to seek a better lives for themselves but discovered they were exploited. They were made to sleep in bug infested dorms suffered discrimination and their grievances feedback to superiors, with online appeal, ...complain forr months and months but nothing done. Out of sheer desperation and frustration, they took MC and stop work for 2 days.
The reaction from my fellow Singaporeans...I find shameful, harsh and inhumane. It is all legalistic, moralistic, selfish and selfish righteous. For a minute put yourself in their shoes - they were recruited here to work, but instead found themselves in extremely poor living conditions and faced discrimination. They are not humans? They don't deserve decent living conditions? The harsh reaction to workers who have suffered is reflective of the mental conditioning of Singaporeans - when it happens to others it is okay so long as I'm okay. It is hypocritical - which one of those who criticise these drivers is willing to accept lower pay than their co-workers for the same work...which one of you is willing to sleep in bug infested quarters, which one of you willing to accept the same work output for $1200 pay?
No doubt they have broken our laws...but only because the PAP govt over they years have modified the labor laws to be the harshest in the developed world to suppress workers' rights and to suppress the power of labour. As usual the PAP govt has used the same tactics of rounding up "ring leaders" for incarceration to sow fear among workers never again to stand up against bad management - they are just finding people to presecute to make examples from postings in Baidu airing grievances and so on. Many countries as they become more developed workers' rights and power improve over time to bring about social equity and prevent exploitation. But in Singapore, labor rights and powers declined and deliberately eroded by the PAP govt.
While I can't blame the PAP for doing things the PAP-style, I'm disappointed by my fellow citizens. They have lost the basic humanity and become dog-like in their behavior....biting victims of exploitation with their vociferous attacks.
The PRC drivers also prove one thing, we have useless unions whose first natural reaction is to criticise and attack workers even before all the facts are out. What kind of useless union is this?!
