It depends on perspective. From the perspective of the peasants, they obviously have more respect for the nouveau riche than old money since they seem to have made it the hard way.
But from the perspective of the old money crowd, nouveau riche are still 2nd class citizens. It takes time to earn their respect because not all nouveau riche people will be able to pass down their wealth for many generations. Most tend to squander their wealth on expensive toys and other expensive items trying to impress others.
Examples are NBA basketball players who came from peasant background earning multimillion dollar salaries and endorsements during their career. But once they have retired, most of them end up broke being chased by their creditors.
The old money will only be impressed if wealth has been passed down for many generations. It's more difficult for wealth to pass down from one generation to the next and still kept intact than for a 1st generation nouveau riche to make his new fortune. Why? Because wealth gets diluted as it passes down from one generation to the next. Also, wealth is constantly under attack from many different angles; i.e. bad business decisions, con artists, friends and relatives borrowing money that never get repaid, divorce settlements, investment losses, frivolous lawsuits, cash flow problem, gambling, and the unrestrained urge to spend on expensive things trying to impress others.
That is why nouveau riche people who drive loud Ferraris and Lambos on the road by revving up the engines have no class and no breeding in the eyes of the old money. Don't ask me why? That's just the way the old money crowd view the nouveau riche.
