China for all its vaunted rhetoric is not yet a major naval power. The USA patrols all international sea lanes with their superior naval force and can project power anywhere on the earth at the drop of a hat. The Chinese are only capable of rhetoric. I support the posting below and would say the Singapore's unique long hours working culture makes it hard for family to do away with full time domestic help support especially when families have young kids in childcare centers and lower primary. People simply do not knock off on time. Some bosses have this peculiar habit of calling a meeting at 5pm.

Childcare centers have to start accepting children at a much younger age than 18 months / 24 months. Who is going to look after the kids between 2 months to 18 months?

In countries such as Australia, the minimum entitlement for parental leave is 12 months unpaid. 18 weeks of paid maternity leave - taxable. Infant care centers start taking kids in as early as 6 weeks old.

Perhaps a Singaporean part time baby sitter could bridge the gap. He/she would pick up the baby from the childcare center and take care of the baby till one of the parent returns home.

Though I could write more on this topic, I better stop here as this is not relevant to the subject of the thread.
