Posters on S'pore's 50 years
By Diana Othman

TAKE in the enormous changes Singapore has undergone in the first poster exhibition on the nation's 50 years of self-governance.

On show are colourful works of art with short, crisp messages and even iconic taglines such as 'Stop At Two', 'Save Water' and 'Be Flu Free'.

'The posters are used to retell and celebrate 50 years of the Singapore Story. The theme of the exhibition revolves around the trials and tribulations of a small city state in its nation building journey,' said a Mica statement on Thursday.

'The story is viewed through the prism of national security.'

The exhibition was launched on Thursday morning by Acting Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts, RAdm (NS) Lui Tuck Yew.

It is held at the Central Public Library of the National Library, and is open to the public from Sept 3 to 15. Admission is free.

Four key themes
The exhibition is divided into four sections:

- The Introduction showcases how different countries, governments and organisations have employed posters as a simple and effective means of communications. It also introduces the subject of threats to Singapore's national security.

-Public health in which posters have long been used in campaigns to educate and warn the public of the perils of unhealthy habits. This section features some of Singapore's familiar poster campaigns in combating chronic and infectious diseases, including drug addiction and smoking, cancer and tuberculosis, and present-day pandemics of Sars, Avian Flu and Influenza A (H1N1).

- Water as the survival of a country of Singapore's size and geography is linked to a stable supply of water. This section looks at campaigns to promote the conservation of water and briefly outlines the historical and political context of the government's efforts to achieve self-sufficiency.

-Internal and external security, the final section, features the range of threats to national security - from within and beyond our borders during the course of our brief history.
