As the years go by, the notion that Singaporeans are poorly informed or ignorant just gets worse. I accept that the captive media has a direct impact in view of the PAP and the Govt uses it to slant or avoid any mention of damaging or adverse content. But we cannot blame the press for all our woes in this area.
What about news and our ability to communicate with our friends, colleagues, acquaintances and the man on the street. Take for example, my comments about Shanmugam and Foo Mee Har. These are not deep dark secrets, dragged out by torture or by some sort of coercion. Both these individuals conducted these things in public. Both these individuals have chosen to run for public office and the way the PAP has portrayed themselves as white than white, their past just does not sit with the image or the office. Nobody could be bothered if they were not running for public office.
I can understand if the 99% of Singaporeans had no clue about Old man's former Head of Security Branch as there was news black-out and the whole thing was hushed up, the CBT of funds quashed and no prosecution took place.
Lets take one simple example - Shanmugam, a SC and his former father-in-law also an SC had a few sharp exchanges in court and these made the rounfs and pretty much common knowledge.
We carry on this way and we have ourselves to blame. Imagine, Foo Mee Har, a Malaysian, raised in Malaysia and began her working career here. Her husband chose to ignore payment from her employer and bankruptcy notice was issued. Her conduct with her boss was clearly outlined in this forum and I am not talking they kneeling down together in prayer for the well-being of the country. What does it say about this individual. What does it say about us as voters.
Both these individuals never denied anything despite these surfacing prior to the recent GE. Any rational, sane and honest individual would have issued a letter or a statement denying it. Yet none appeared.
Let take Yaacob, a long standing cabinet and an MP who sat in Singapore Parliament for 14 years. Yet no one knew that he was married to an American. Most people appeared stunned.. By the way, the Singapore Cabinet is not your neighbourhood provision store hidden in some HDB estate.
We seem more interested and knowledgeable about some third rate MediaCorp artiste, ghost in Pulau Tekong, and mercenary sportmen and women. Truly sad.
