SINGAPORE: Police have arrested a 30-year-old man in Clementi, who is believed to have snatched a gold chain from an elderly woman and tried to pawn it.
The victim, an 85-year-old woman, was said to be sitting alone on Thursday at around 3pm at a void deck in Blk 405, Clementi Ave 1, when the suspect pushed her from behind, snatching her gold chain valued at S$500.
Police said her cries attracted the attention of a passer-by who immediately called the police.
While the police were combing the area for the suspect, based on the victim's description, they received another call that someone was trying to pawn a gold chain at a goldsmith shop in Clementi Ave 3.
When the police approached the suspect at the shop, he tried to struggle and run away.
He was arrested within 90 minutes of the crime, with the help of two more members of the public.
The suspect will be charged on Saturday in court with robbery with hurt.
If convicted, he faces jail of up to 20 years and can be given at least 12 strokes of the cane.
