Singapore's pioneer generation to be given special package that focuses on their medical needs; details expected in next Budget, says Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the People's Action Party Convention on Sunday.



SINGAPORE: Singapore's pioneer generation will be given special recognition for their contribution to the country.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced a Pioneer Generation Package at the People's Action Party (PAP) Convention on Sunday.

Mr Lee, who is also the party's secretary-general, said the package will focus on the pioneer generation's medical needs.

He added that details will be announced in a couple of months -- by the Budget in February 2014.

PM Lee said taking care of the pioneer generation is another manifestation of a fair and just society.

He also explained what being fair and just means in Singapore's new phase of development.

Mr Lee said it is about rewarding individuals fairly for their efforts, developing a culture of mutual support and inclusiveness, strengthening social nets, and taking special care of the elderly.

One initiative which will help the elderly is MediShield Life.

The Health Ministry is currently working out details with the public and industry.

Mr Lee gave the assurance to Singaporeans that the government will keep premiums affordable for the elderly and needy.

I am sure their economists are figuring how much to dish out and at what age so that that they don't spend too much before you die. Then they need to figure out how to recover this two or three times over through GST and ERPs and property taxes.
