chinese lunar new year is a meaningless day. calculated based on moon rotation around the earth, which is getting further and further away from earth. Japan have switched from lunar new year to english new year. singapore should follow japan and the west to switch the date of an artificial new year.

Regularly I got regularly burnt by crackers myself and even blasted my fingers, and had continued to do so. I never belived in keeping ANY childern in ultra-safe green-houses.

Crackers fireworks are BIG businesses, but I won't care for their economic advantages either.

Festive celebrations is a necessasity. No difference from transportation. It is not based on what is needed more badly, they are just the same necessasity that can be managed to a reasonable safety level and the rest of the risk be accepted just like any other things.

Noise are made by everything from industries to schools to transportation by road / rail / air and same as safety, they can be managed by rules to a reasonable level and accept the rest. No diff at all.

Children need to use their hands and some times by hurting them to learn and get trained, Just like in spots and anything aspects. Children also die drowned while learning to swim. Rules and facilities manged it to a reasonable level and the losses in cases they happened are to be accepted. No I won't ask for firecracker to be ban if children died in my own family, just like I won't demand swimming pools be banned if they died swimming.

Maybe you will not be devastated by the death of family members due to firework, but gov are the one who set the law and since they care about their citizen. Therefore it is their responsibility to prevent un-necessary loss of limbs and life.

But since some first world countries can do it, we should be able to relax the fireworks and firecrackers law, with high quality fireworks and limit it to one day and one location.

These are nothing but just very common unfortunate facts of lives that happens just daily from the beginning of time, for all sorts of reasons. What is new?

People suffer losses due to all reasons, it would be either one or another. There are nothing stopping people from doing what they do just to stay SAFE. People died chocked by their meals, died having sex, lost their limbs for working at industries, etc etc. Are you going to stop these for safety sake. Not me! No way!

People got hurt for all sorts of celebrations, CNY is just one of them, people gets shot on X'mas New Year, Hari Raya, Visak Day, Halloween, National Days, Birthdays etc etc. Are you going to ban celebrations for safety. People are enjoying these celebrations. Death is inevitable for all humans, so celebration may be the happiest way to die. I rather absolutely die celebrating than to die of ailment or die working or die quarrelling or eating. Seriously.

Fireworks and other forms of celebrations such as drinking and eating also kill the people and hurt them at times. But that is not preventing them, never, since the beginning of time into the furthest future you can imagine.

Why so afraid to die or get hurt? It is a natural and common part of live. Just live naturally and accept the reasonable risk! Facing risk of hurt and death is the best excitement & satisfaction for humans, that is why people when to challenge all their adventures. Diving in water; Diving Sky; go on roller coasters; Ski; Extreme sports; Bunjee jump etc etc. If it was all totally safe the fun are lost!


Because of risk of death and hurt people brought out their own very best and improved. That is development of skill and abilities and extending your own limits. If there was no risk and challenges and everything was 100% safe no one will get to be very capable and all will get lazy and become useless. The gain / lost gave people the sastisfaction and fun.
