Many Thais believe that when a god or spirit makes a wish come true, they must redeem the vow made when they asked for it to be granted. One extreme example of this belief can be witnessed at Baan Jujaka in Bangkok. Here, thousands of Jujaka statues, a greedy old Brahmin who lived as a beggar in Buddhist legend, are worshipped. Visitors to Baan Jujaka usually redeem their vow by offering coyote dancing – a provocative dance with sexually explicit moves – to the beggar spirit.

Thousands of Thais gathered and waved national and royal flags along the Chao Phraya riverbank to greet His Majesty the King on Saturday. Sanga Chotevilaiwan is the spiritual medium of a 45-year-old “guman thong” called Suan Puk – the soul of a boy who died young and who can, according to her, predict the future. Up to 30 wild pigs have been captured by livestock officials at a deserted land plot in Phra Samut Chedi district of Samut Prakan. A businessman reportedly rented the land early this year and released the pigs he raised for good luck. The pigs have multiplied to more than 100, often running amok and creating a nuisance for residents in the area. The animals were yesterday vaccinated against foot and mouth disease and moved to a monastery in Phetchabun.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals(PETA) staged a silent protest on Thursday to call for an end to animal cruelty and encourage Bangkokians to go vegetarian.
