National Human Rights Society (Hakam) chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan has urged Dr Mahathir Mohamad and the government to act on the alleged corruption case of Sarawak governor Abdul Taib Mahmud (above).

"They (Pakatan Harapan government) must have the political will to move against Taib, otherwise they are no different from the previous government (BN)," she told business radio station BFM during an interview this morning.

She was asked about concerns that Taib's alleged wrongdoing might be erased following the meeting took place between Mahathir and Taib in Kuala Lumpur after the May 9 polls.

"Oh yes, I am concerned about Taib. I think there is enough evidence out there, not just here, but overseas (to act against Taib)," she said.

"If you are going on an agenda on the rule of law, then it applies as to everyone, there is no exception," she added.

Although what was discussed was not made known, a source, a PBB leader, told Malaysiakini that he did not dismiss the possibility of the formation of a state-based coalition.

Abdul Taib had long been accused by environmental groups of exploiting Sarawak's natural resources during his 33-years of administration, including heavy logging which is said to have stripped the state of huge portions of its rainforests.

He is speculated to be among Malaysia's richest, with business interests in a variety of industries locally and abroad.

Taib has been under investigation by Malaysia's anti-graft agency since 2011 and is regularly accused by activist groups of enriching his family through his control over the awarding of infrastructure contracts.

Australia agrees to extradite Sirul Azhar, says UK report

PETALING JAYA: Australian authorities have approved Malaysia's request to extradite convicted killer Sirul Azhar Umar and is expected to return to the country within a month, a British daily reported.

Citing sources, The Guardian reported that the former police officer, who was convicted and sentenced to death for the murder of Mongolian model Altantuya Shaariibuu, will leave Australia after Malaysia agreed to cover the costs.

Australia previously refused the extradition of Sirul as it violated the country's laws of not sending home a person facing the death sentence.

However, the report said Malaysian authorities have assured the Australian counterparts that Sirul would receive fair treatment when he returns.

Sirul had said that he was prepared to assist the new government to tell what actually transpired provided that he was given a full pardon.

He also expressed his displeasure over how the murder trial took place, adding that he had only followed his lawyer's instructions.

He claimed that during the trial, the "main witness" in the case was not called, thus, hoping that the case would be heard once again.

In 2013, the Court of Appeal overturned the sentences of Sirul and Azilah Hadrim, his accomplice back then. But, upon the prosecution's appeal, the death sentences were upheld by the Federal Court.

Sirul then fled to Australia where he was detained by the Australian Immigration after Interpol issued a red notice on him.

Altantuya, 28, was believed to have been shot dead before her body was blown to bits with explosives at a secondary forest near the Subang Dam in Puncak Alam, Shah Alam, in 2006.

On May 16, Mongolian President Khaltmaagiin Battulga wrote to Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to ask him to help bring justice in the case of Altantuya.

PKR leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim suggested that Sirul be brought back to Malaysia for a fresh trial.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Barisan Nasional (BN) opposition coalition is teetering on the verge of collapse after its component parties in the east Malaysian state of Sarawak threatened to ditch the decades-old alliance.

The 13 parties that comprise BN are now turning inwards to save themselves after having suffered their worst electoral defeat at the May 9 general election.

Once considered a "safe deposit" for BN, component parties in Sarawak are now mulling to leave the coalition as early as next week.

Combined, the four Sarawak parties including the state ruling Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) hold 19 seats out of 79 won by BN at the election.

Amir Fareed, research analyst of KRA Group, said: "If PBB walks away, BN should just dissolve itself and rebrand itself as another coalition."

The PBB’s move comes after the Pakatan Harapan government led by Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad filed in court to claim full ownership of oil and gas resources in Sarawak, forcing the ruling party in Sarawak to further distance itself from BN.

"This is a big bargaining chip that Mahathir will leverage on whether the Sarawak state government will want to remain in BN or otherwise," said Amir.

"If Sarawak stays in the BN fold, it will be able to provide BN with some resources to sustain the coalition."

Acting UMNO chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi met Mahathir on Thursday, which was widely seen as a desperate attempt to save the BN alliance from crumbling.

The Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) and the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA), have also signalled their intention to leave BN.

This comes after their leaders were voted out by the people in the recent polls.

S Subramaniam, president of MIC, said: "We feel BN has to reform to meet the current challenges. We will see if the reform happens, otherwise we will keep our options open."

MCA, which was left with only one seat in parliament, has even blamed the UMNO-led BN for the disastrous showing at the polls.

Bung Mokhtar Radin, UMNO supreme council member, said: "I am not worried about BN breaking up. We can see some other parties did not contribute anything (at the election) - so what’s the point of them remaining with us?

"It's best that they leave BN early, so we don’t have enemies in our midst."

UMNO’s acting deputy president Hishammuddin Hussein said BN must change.

“We have to be brave to go into new frontiers which we have not charted before," he said.

"This is an opportunity to look at things afresh; this is not just the responsibility of UMNO members but also the responsibility of BN members because the people have spoken. They did not reject us completely, they need us to be realistic.

"Going forward, it must be something to give them hope, we are going to change not just for Malays, but for all Malaysians."

UMNO will have its party elections at the end of June - an opportunity for the 72-year-old party to renew itself and redefine its role in Malaysia’s changing political landscape.

Najib explains why he had so many luxury handbags, lots of cash, jewellery

Former Malaysian prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak says he shouldn't be blamed for the multi-billion-dollar 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal, and declares he knows nothing about money from the state fund appearing in his personal account.

Updated 20 June, 2018
LANGKAWI (Malaysia) — Former Malaysian prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak says he shouldn't be blamed for the multi-billion-dollar 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal, and declares he knows nothing about money from the state fund appearing in his personal account.

He does, though, have explanations for the vast sums of cash, luxury handbags and jewellery recently seized from his homes by the Malaysian authorities.

Speaking to Reuters in his first sit-down interview since his shock May 9 election defeat, Mr Najib said his advisors and the management and board of 1MDB, had wrongly kept the alleged embezzlement of funds a secret from him.

Newly-elected Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad told Reuters on Tuesday (June 19) that the authorities have "an almost perfect case" against Mr Najib on charges of embezzlement, misappropriation and bribery linked to 1MDB.

The 64-year-old politician lost the election after a decade in power at least partly because of the 1MDB scandal, which United States Attorney-General Jeff Sessions has described as "kleptocracy at its worst".

Mr Najib, in some of his most extensive comments yet on the 1MDB scandal, said he did not know if hundreds of millions of dollars that moved through his personal account was from 1MDB, and if money from the fund was eventually laundered to acquire assets globally, including yachts, paintings, gems and prime real estate.

"I’m not party to the yacht, the paintings...I’ve never seen those paintings whatsoever,” said Mr Najib.

"I was not aware of these purchases. This was done without my knowledge. I would never authorise 1MDB funds to be used for any of these items. I’ve been in government so long, I know what’s right and what’s wrong," he said in the interview held at a luxurious sea-facing private villa in a five-star hotel on the Malaysian holiday island of Langkawi.

He blamed 1MDB's board, saying it was incumbent upon them to tell him if something was wrong.

Relaxing in a black t-shirt and brown pants,Mr Najib said he was enjoying golf, food, and time with his family.

The family booked the villa to celebrate Eid holidays together. Mr Najib's children, including stepson Riza Aziz, a Hollywood film producer, were with him for the week, his aides told Reuters.

WEDDING GIFTS

Malaysian investigators looking into 1MDB say they believe that Mr Najib and his wife Rosmah Mansor have amassed vast amounts of wealth and property using funds from the state fund. Ms Rosmah briefly appeared at the interview but Mr Najib said she would not take questions.

Nearly 300 boxes of designer handbags and dozens of bags filled with cash and jewellery were among the items taken away by police in raids at properties linked to Mr Najib's family. Items included Birkin handbags from the luxury goods maker Hermes, each worth up to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Mr Najib said the public seizure of handbags and other luxury items created a negative perception but most were gifts given to his wife and daughter and had nothing to do with 1MDB.

“Yes these were gifts, particularly with my daughter’s they were tagged, they were actually labeled: when, by whom,” adding that a lot of them were wedding presents.

Mr Najib said his son-in-law Daniyar Nazarbayev, the nephew of Kazakstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev, also gifted many of the handbags to Ms Rosmah.

"People might find it hard to understand, but my son-in-law for example, he gets Birkin from his source, five or six at one go," he said.

"His family has got some means, so it has nothing to do with 1MDB if it comes from Kazakhstan."

He also said RM114 million (S$38.65 million) found at his family home in Kuala Lumpur were party funds belonging to the United Malays National Organisation (umno), of which he was president until he stepped down shortly after the poll. Umno was part of the Barisan Nasional coalition that lost the election.

PINK DIAMONDS

US prosecutors have alleged that more than US$4.5 billion (S$6.11 billion) of 1MDB funds was laundered through a complex web of transactions and shell companies. The US Department of Justice (DoJ) has filed several lawsuits to claim about US$1.7 billion in assets believed to have been stolen from 1MDB.

Some of the assets sought include a Picasso painting, luxury real estate in South California and New York, shares in a Hollywood production company and a US$265 million yacht, and more than US$200 million worth of jewellery - including a 22-carat pink diamond pendant and necklace.

Mr Najib said this jewellery set was also meant to be a gift for his wife but she never received it.

"And until today we do not know...she says the item is not in her possession," Mr Najib said.

In the interview, Mr Najib for the first time also spoke at length about Mr Low Taek Jho, a Malaysian financier better known as Jho Low. US and Malaysian investigators have named Mr Low as a key figure who benefited from 1MDB funds.

Mr Najib said he felt that Mr Low's connections in the Middle East, particularly with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, could be helpful in pulling in more investment to Malaysia from those places.

But he said he had never instructed Mr Low to get involved in 1MDB, and had no control over what he did.

“I didn’t give him instructions, but he volunteered to do certain things, which he thought would help 1MDB. But whatever he did ultimately is the responsibility of the management and board.”

Malaysia is seeking to arrest Mr Low, believed to be residing abroad, for his involvement in the 1MDB scandal.

He described Mr Low and his stepson Riza as friends but said he was not aware of any dealings involving 1MDB funds in Mr Riza's Hollywood production company, which produced The Wolf of Wall Street among other movies.

When asked if he was still in touch with Mr Low, Mr Najib said: "We have cut off communication again. I don’t know where he is.”

Mr Low's lawyer did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

SAUDI CONNECTION

Mr Najib has consistently denied any wrongdoing in 1MDB. He has said US$681 million transferred into his personal bank account was a donation from Saudi Arabia, and not as US lawsuits have alleged misappropriated funds from 1MDB.

Mr Najib said he had been given assurances from the late Saudi King Abdullah Abdulaziz Al Saud that Saudi Arabia would be sending a donation.

"All I knew, I accepted at face value that this is coming from the Saudis, from King Abdullah at his behest, at his instruction," Mr Najib said.

Mr Najib said he had no knowledge of any transactions involving his personal account, as he had appointed Mr Nik Faisal Ariff Kamil, the director of SRC International, a former 1MDB unit, to manage it.

Malaysia's anti-graft agency has issued an arrest warrant for Mr Nik Faisal but his whereabouts are unknown.

NEVER HAD PLANS TO LEAVE

The former prime minister said he is determined to stay in Malaysia and fight against the allegations, even if he faces the possibility of going to jail.

"No, I never had plans to leave. Because if I leave, there's presumption of guilt," he said.

"I cannot be a fugitive for the rest of my life. I want to clear my name." REUTERS

By JOSEPH KAOS Jr

PUTRAJAYA: The Altantuya Shaariibuu murder case should be reopened, says Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

In a meeting with the victim’s father Dr Shaariibuu Setev and family lawyer Ramkarpal Singh on Wednesday (June 20), Dr Mahathir agreed that the 12-year-old case should be looked into again.

“He (Dr Mahathir) agreed that it is a case that warrants further investigation,” said Ramkarpal.

“The prime minister however is also adamant that the process must follow the rule of law.

“We also agree with him and have started the due process, which began with meeting the Attorney-General yesterday (June 19). We are confident that the rule of law will take its course.

“It was a very satisfactory meeting. The Prime Minister also spoke in detail with Dr Shaariibuu,” Ramkarpal told reporters outside the Prime Minister’s office here after the 30-minute meeting.

Also present were a Mongolian translator and a representative from the Mongolian consulate.

Dr Shaariibuu had lodged a report earlier on Wednesday (June 20) at the Dang Wangi police headquarters in Kuala Lumpur seeking a fresh investigation.

He also said Mongolian President Khaltmaagiin Battulga had spoken to him over the phone to thank Dr Mahathir.

After Pakatan Harapan won its historic victory in GE14 and took over Putrajaya, Khaltmaagiin had also written to Dr Mahathir.

“As the President of Mongolia, I pay special attention to the grave crime committed in Malaysia on Oct 18, 2006 – the murder of Ms Shariibuu Altantuya, a Mongolian national and a mother of two children,” Khaltmaagiin said in his letter.

He urged the then newly sworn-in premier to help bring justice to Altantuya’s family “to invigorate the atmosphere in the bilateral relations between our two countries”.

Two former policemen, Sirul Azhar Umar and accomplice Azilah Hadri, were convicted of murdering Altantuya in 2009 and sentenced to death by the High Court, although the Court of Appeal overturned this in 2013.

On the prosecution’s appeal, the Federal Court upheld their death sentences, but Sirul had fled to Australia by then.

Former political analyst Abdul Razak Baginda, who was charged together with them, was freed on Oct 31, 2008, after the court found no concrete evidence against him.

Meanwhile, Ramkarpal said the identity of the individual who ordered the murder of Altantuya could already be determined from the previous police investigation.

“I believe the previous investigation has already identified the person, or if there is more than one, who ordered the murder.

“Whoever ordered this should be brought to face justice. The crime is heavier than the one committed by those who followed orders and did the killing,” he declared.

Altantuya's murder: Najib is ready to be probed
Published: 12:22 pm | Modified: 12:54 pm

Former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak is ready to face police investigation with regard to the accusations against him over Mongolian national Altantuya Shaariibuu's murder.
"It is indeed the police's responsibility to investigate any police report that they receive.
"I myself had last year instructed my officer to lodge a police report against me over the Altantuya case (so that police can investigate).
"Even though the police have said that they are awaiting instructions from the Attorney-General's Chambers, I welcome the investigation and hope that it will be done transparently and fairly without any political interest," he said in a statement on Facebook.

Earlier today, Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador said police may summon Najib for questioning over the murder.
ea3710c000f28b600ad547789f735bf1.jpg

Last week, former police special action unit (UTK) personnel Azilah Hadri (photo), who was convicted for Altantuya's murder, claimed he had acted on Najib's orders in a statutory declaration (SD).
He was Najib's bodyguard at the time.
Altantuya was murdered in October 2006 and her remains blown up with military-grade explosives.
Azilah and his UTK colleague Sirul Azhar Umar were found guilty and sentenced to death in April 2009.
The Court of Appeal overturned their conviction in August 2013 but the guilty verdict was reinstated by the Federal Court in January 2015.
However, prior to the Federal Court reversing the Court of Appeal's decision, Sirul had fled to Australia and is now in an immigration detention centre there.
He cannot be deported due to Australia's stance against the death penalty.
With the SD, Azilah is now applying to the Federal Court for a review of the court's decision which found him guilty of murder.
Najib, in his statement today, also urged police to investigate two other police reports related to SRC International Sdn Bhd.
Najib is standing trial for corruption over the alleged misappropriation of the state-owned company's funds.
