Liew Beng Huat, 53, was fined $2,500 on Thursday for hurting taxi driver Alan Yong Cher Ming.
He had pleaded guilty to hitting the 45-year-old cabby on the back of the head with his hand on grave and sudden provocation rendered by the driver.
A district court heard that the SMRT cab had picked up Liew, his girlfriend and a friend at the St James Power Station at about 5am on June 24 this year. The friend got off in the MacPherson area. At Lorong 2 Toa Payoh, Liew asked Mr Yong to wait as he wanted to accompany his girlfriend up to her flat.
The cabby, afraid that the passenger might not return, asked for some money as a deposit and an argument broke out. Both men decided to proceed to a police station and during the drive there, Mr Yong uttered the profanity about Mr Liew's mother. Furious, the passenger hit the cabby's head.
