SINGAPORE : A people-initiated projectaims to rally Singaporeans to honour the country's founding fathers.
They saw Singapore through its early, tumultuous years, and now their efforts will be recognised.
Ten Old Guards who formed the First Cabinet of Singapore - including then Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, Mr S Rajaratnam, and Mr Othman Wok - will be honoured in a new community initiative.
The others are: Dr Toh Chin Chye, Mr Ong Pang Boon, Mr Jek Yuen Thyong, Mr Yong Nyuk Lin, Dr Goh Keng Swee, Mr Lim Kim San and Mr E W Barker.
The children of the late E W Barker, seen here being sworn as Law Minister in 1964, have much to say about the leaders.
Carla Barker said: "They were young when we knew them. I think they were in their early forties, through to maybe fifties. And every one of them was a really special character.
"Everyone of them was a character in their own right. And so it's absolutely right that Singaporeans remember who they were, because they added so much to the fabric of our society."
The project will rally 5,000 Singaporeans to decorate 10 canvasses using thumbprints. These will then be passed on to award-winning artists - one as young as 10 years old - for the final touch.
Artist Rosihan Dahim said: "I have named this painting 'Historical Steps'. It shows the steps that have been taken by our previous Cabinet ministers, who have truly taken the task to develop Singapore."
The event aims to generate awareness of the history-makers and their contributions to Singapore.
The project is organised by Halogen Foundation Singapore, a not-for-profit organisation and social innovation company Studio You.
Mr Michael Palmer, chairman of Halogen Foundation and MP for Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC, said: "Remind the younger generation about the leaders that once were because not many of them know who these people are.
"And you can't always have top-down initiative of the government saying you've got to have this, that or the other."
The finished pieces will be presented to the 10 pioneers or their next-of-kin in November.
