Said candidate and former NTUC Income chief Tan Kin Lian: 'There are advantages for the prime minister and president to be close together... If I want to be the voice of the people, it's good to be close to him.
'Dr Tan is worried about independence. But independence does not mean you have to be far away. You can be close together. In Parliament, the PAP and opposition sit in the same room, but they are still independent of each other.'

What an idiot. PAP MPs and the Opp sit in the same room out of necessity to make democracy work. Does the PM have to live with the President? For the early years over a long time, the PM and Prez have stayed in diff roofs without any problems too, and it has always been designed that way.

I agree with TKL on this point. In any case, it's the PM's OFFICE not his home. They don't stay together. They just happen to work in close proximity. Yes, it would have been better if the PMO was not located in the Istana grounds, but it would be a waste of resources to move out now. How come TCB did'nt bring this up in 1993 when the Elected Presidency started? The President and PM has far more urgent issues to address. Its just a symbolic issue. Maybe the PMO should move out to Pedra Branca?

Sitting together during parliamentary sessions, compared to sitting together every day, through sharing of same office are totally different scenarios.

No wonder this guy has difficulty pronouncing "partisan". The brain, if any, is not working. It was really painful hearing "partition" throughout his interviews.

The issue is not proximity or independence. This is a personal swipe at old man. The Istana was his personal home for decades. Only Yusof Ishak was treated properly. When Sheares became president, he stayed at his home in Nathan Road. The same with everyone else except Devan who loved to talk cock with old until he screwed himself up. Old man threw OTC to Command house but not many were aware of it. TCB is very first person to raise it. Anyway I have been around the world but have yet to come across an someone else's office in some other's guys home.

Scroo, I am surprised how many people cannot even see the significance behind this. All the "independence" that the TJS supporters have been screaming for is played shrewdly here by TCB. I thought it should have been TJS who said this. The people who wanted the President to have more voice, more power to "check on gahmen" should have seen this as anything but brilliant.

Imagine the President's Office which have like maximum of 10 officers against the PM Office just next door with a whole army of officers and Minister of PM Office. How you going to establish your own turf and "fight" with the PM? The "fighters" are now laughing at TCB when TCB is delivering exactly what they asked for!

It is becoming a silly sitcom family bickering fiasco to distract silly Singaporeans .

Since Singaporeans are already familiar to sitcoms .
