PAP actually garnered 98 votes less in BE2012 than GE2006
Yesterday, DPM Teo Chee Hean said that despite the loss, PAP was "encouraged that more residents have seen and supported Desmond's vision of a new future".
In PM Lee Hsien Loong's Statement published in newspapers today, he said was "encouraged that the PAP obtained 37.9% of the votes this time. This improves on our results in the two previous general elections: 2006 (37.3%) and 2011 (35.2%). Clearly, many Hougang voters were impressed by Desmond's sincerity, compassion and commitment, and attrracted by the PAP's message of change and hope. But unfortunately there were not quite enough of them for Desmond to win."
Looking at the actual numbers (see below), it seems that PAP is referring to the fact that it garnered 145 more votes this year, compared to last year. Is this a significant enough improvement for the PAP take such encouragement from?
However, even though in terms of percentage PAP got 37.91% this year, which is more than 37.3% in GE2006, PAP actually garnered 98 votes less in BE2012 than GE2006. So, I am not sure if BE2012 results can be said to be a real improvement over GE2006.
