Aviation News – Indonesia to Strengthen Air Force with Major Jet Acquisition
Indonesia has officially announced plans to purchase at least 42 Chengdu J-10 fighter jets from China, marking a significant step in its ongoing military modernization program.
The decision was confirmed by Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, who said the multirole aircraft will soon be seen flying over Jakarta. According to the Finance Ministry, a budget exceeding $9 billion has been approved for the deal. The move reflects Indonesia’s efforts to expand its aerial capabilities amid rising regional security challenges and the need to replace older aircraft in its fleet.
The J-10 is a fourth-generation, multirole fighter developed by the Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group. It is designed for both air-to-air combat and ground-attack missions, equipped with advanced avionics and fly-by-wire controls. Once operational, the new fleet is expected to significantly enhance the Indonesian Air Force’s reach and combat readiness across the archipelago.
“This acquisition is part of Indonesia’s strategic push to modernize its defense forces and ensure national air security,” said Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, highlighting the government’s commitment to strengthening domestic defense capabilities.
With delivery timelines still to be finalized, defense analysts believe the deal could mark a deeper shift in Indonesia’s defense partnerships toward China. The acquisition underscores Jakarta’s intent to diversify its military suppliers and balance regional power dynamics.
In the coming years, the integration of the J-10 fighters is expected to boost Indonesia’s deterrence capabilities and reinforce its position as a key air power in Southeast Asia.
