AUSTRALIANS will be slugged with the controversial flood levy from today to help fund reconstruction efforts.
Anyone earning an annual salary of $50,000 or less will escape the charge, which hits people on higher incomes hardest.
Prime Minister Julia Gillard has described the levy as a small price to pay to help fellow Australians.
Today will also mark the start of a freeze on Family Tax Benefit Part A and Part B supplements, which will last until 2014, and changes to the upper-income thresholds for some family payments.
