SINGAPORE - Daryl Tan thrilled a nation when he secured Singapore's first medal yesterday in the inaugural Youth Olympic Games.

The taekwondo exponent reached the semi-finals of the 55kg division and was guaranteed a medal, with no play-off for third place.

His bout in the last four against Iran's world junior champion Kaveh Rezaei was watched by many VIPs, among them Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean and Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports Vivian Balakrishnan.

But not his mum and dad, Amy Yeoh and Raymond Tan, who were unable to get tickets.

It was a shame, especially when Hall 401 at the International Convention Centre at Suntec City, which holds a capacity of 840, was half-empty when Daryl took on the Iranian star. According to a source close to the event, many of the empty seats were tickets that were allocated to schools.

The schoolchildren missed out on a special occasion for Singapore.

Earlier in the afternoon, Daryl had earned his place in the semi-final with a 6-5 win over Myanmar's Shein Naing Dwe Shein, after getting a bye to the last eight.

It was a completely different story against the Iranian. Daryl, 17, from Raffles Institution, fell behind quickly in Round 1, and could not find his way back. Four kicks to the head were enough for the referee to call off the bout in Round 3, with Kaveh leading 12-0. Daryl and Vietnam's Nguyen Quoc Cuong took the bronze.

The Singaporean brushed aside suggestions that he carried an injury into the bout, focusing instead on Rezaei's strength.

"This is the toughest opponent I've ever met. The Iranians train a lot more than us.

"In Singapore we're restricted by studies, we cannot invest too much time in taekwondo and neglect our studies. But I'm happy to achieve my target of reaching the semi-finals."

Lauding his achievement, Minister Balakrishnan said: "We are all so proud of him because he never gave up his fighting spirit. What we need in sports in Singapore now is self-belief - knowing you can do it and have the right to go for the best and go all out to do it."

Rezaei went on to win the gold, beating Nursultan Mamayev of Kazakhstan 4-2.

YOG just keeps getting funnier by the day. I might just cancel my cable subscription of comedies, if YOG is a daily event.

This YOG is getting ridiclous by the minute ..... No tickets for the parents of the participant representing Singapore ... Good God ....:(

If they give it to parents of the participants they will be happy to attend. Not forcing the school children to go.

There will be panick in some office in the MOE as the un-used and un-distributed tickets sit lying on the table of some AO.

Don't be surprised if an FT was in-charge of the ticketing. Pure laziness and or stupidity on their part again. What a disastrous own goal from the PAPies and their lackeys!

The YOG organiser are so good at encouraging our sportmen to perform their best during the competition. I'm sure our sportmen could only do their best without the presence of the people that they love.

Well done!

Own goal? More like go to wrong stadium for match!

Medal winner : Why you all like that. I train so many hours, so much sweat and yet no give tickets for my parents ..:(

Organiser : Shut Up !!

There's always logical simple explanation for such things.

Fearing low ticket sales, MCYS got MOE to block-book tickets.

MOE allocate the tickets to students, who give excuses or MCs not to turn up.

So while MCYS can claim tickets are sold out, the seats are empty.

Gov try to cover one one thing( empty seat/unsold ticket) by snatch up all the ticket using tax payer money. In the end student all MIA.
End up parent want to buy ticket unavailable.
Singapore ministers really good at solving one small problem creating bigger problem.

Minister Balakrishnan said: "We are all so proud of him because he never gave up his fighting spirit. What we need in sports in Singapore now is self-belief - knowing you can do it and have the right to go for the best and go all out to do it." >>

At last i found something in common between those who are anti-pap and Vivian, that we too, also will never give up our fighting spirit. What we need in politics in Singapore is our-belief - knowing we can do it and have the right to go for the best and go all out to do what is the best for our country.

Hooray Hooray !!!

Singapore has silver lining for its future !!

These students are now ready for their slavery in the SAF.

MOE allocate the tickets to students, who give excuses or MCs not to turn up.

so that schboy received a bye and qualify for quarter-finals without doing anything.

in quarters, he beat the myanmar boy. then in semis, he lost to the iran boy. so all in all only 2 bouts, 1 win and 1 lose.

fucking easy to get bronze. what honour. chey:cool:

In any case, the parents of Singaporean participants not allocated free tickets is the biggest cockup of all. What were they thinking? Oh, your children participating, you sure will pay for tickets to watch. No need give you free, give free to someone else who's not interested to watch.

There ish nothing free in sinkapore.
Everything must Pay And Pay.

:o :( :o

YOG is a "resounding success" and the logistics are "first-class" as our "beloved" mainstream media will say.
