Credibility of witness questioned in trial
ANOTHER TV journalist was in the limelight in the molestation trial of former TV presenter Vidya Shankar Aiyar, which resumed on Monday after a seven-week break.
Channel News Asia's Jennifer Alejandro took to the stand to testify for the prosecution against Shankar, but found her credibility questioned by the defence – because of a previous “intimate” relationship she admitted to having had with him.
Shankar is accused of molesting a 30-year-old woman after they met at a party on Nov 2 last year. He allegedly molested her in his apartment the next morning.
Alejandro told the court that the alleged victim had told her that Shankar, 37, had been “hitting on her” at the party they all attended on Nov 2.
The woman alleged that Shankar had taken advantage of her, by taking her to his home instead of to hers, when she had had too much to drink. She claimed that she found herself undressed when she woke up the next morning in his bed, and that he molested her as she was getting dressed.
But Shankar's lawyer, Subhas Anandan, suggested that Alejandro might not be altogether truthful in her account. Under cross-examination, she admitted to having a short-lived relationship with Shankar in 2000.
She said they broke up when she realised he was cheating on her.
Asked by Subhas if she had had a sexual relationship with his client, she conceded that they had been “intimate”.
The prosecution, led by Deputy Public Prosecutor David Khoo, objected to the personal question, but District Judge Victor Yeo said he would give Subhas some “leeway”.
The lawyer then explained that since “hell has no fury like a woman scorned”, it was possible the witness wanted to get back at his client. Alejandro denied this.
Alejandro said the woman did not know of her previous relationship with Shankar, nor did she (Alejandro) tell her about it.
