Orchard Rd to close for party on Christmas Day
THERE will be dancing in the streets on Christmas Day.
Besides partygoers, there will be 500 performers singing and acting in Orchard Road, which will be closed to vehicles from 1pm to 1am the next day.
The Celebrate Christmas in Singapore (CCIS) event will be held in the area for the seventh year running. Last year's party saw a turnout of 60,000, and a similar number are expected this year. Foreign Minister George Yeo will be guest of honour.
Floats will be parked along the shopping belt, and a stage will be erected on the road between Paragon and Ngee Ann City for a concert that will include carolling, skits and dancing. It will start at 7.45pm.
The 1pm closure is necessary so that the stage can be completed by 5pm, CCIS chief coordinator Peter Sng said.
Although the concert will end around 10pm, the road will be reopened only at 1am to allow for a clean-up.
Mr Sng added that about 80 auxiliary police officers will assist motorists at the road closure areas. Volunteers will help with inquiries and ensure a smooth flow of human traffic.
The police said parking restrictions on peripheral roads will be strictly enforced. Vehicles found parking or causing an obstruction will be towed away.
The police also reminded the public to be vigilant about crime in crowded places during the holiday revelry.
Serangoon Gardens Circus will also be closed on New Year's Eve, from 4.30pm to 3am the next day, for a countdown party to be attended by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
