Opposition plans to boycott Parliament

Yes. I am sure the title captured your attention. But the opposition here refers to Myanmar's opposition, led by Aung San Su Kyi. I just read this news and cannot help but feeling amused

I find it amusing because NLD worked so hard to gain seats in the parliament but they are going to boycott the seats they fought so hard to get. Even if they want the constitution to be amended, they have to do it through the parliament! But by boycotting their own seats, nothing will change and this will lead to more unhappiness in Myanmar. Sometimes I cannot understand what is on their 'liberal' mind.

I cannot help but to imagine CSJ's SDP gain seats in Parliament but they choose boycott the Parliament because PAP is still in power or because PAP is undemocratic.

Myanmar opposition mulls boycott over oath row

YANGON (AFP) - Members of Aung San Suu Kyi's Myanmar opposition party elected in recent landmark polls could boycott parliament over a row about the constitutional oath, one of its members said on Thursday.

'If we attend the parliament, we have to take an oath to become an MP officially saying we will safeguard the constitution. This is a problem,' said the National League for Democracy (NLD) member, who did not want to be named.

'The government has amended the wording in the election law to 'respect the constitution' - that's why we accepted the amendment and took part in the election. But the wording hasn't changed yet in the constitution.'

He said Ms Suu Kyi had asked President Thein Sein to amend the oath and the NLD elected members would discuss the issue at a meeting next week.

Ya, absolutely stupid and fatal idea. Take a leaf from our Singapore history - the Barisan Sosialis! They boycotted parliament to obsolescence and extinction, and blighted Singapore's political past and future.

It's a bit different there. If NLD boycotts, they can still get elected later no matter what. In fact they look like they will form govt. But all that only as long as ASSK is alive.

Boycott is the worst strategy in politics. The only way to fight a political battle is to be right where the battle is, unless you're about to be drag down by some political allies or foes, then you siam first to fight another day (留得青山在).

I never agree with boycott or strike. If you don't want the job, resign. Not throw tantrum and try to hold the position and other people hostage.

Singapore has seen some strikes and one Parliamentary boycott before, by old Barisan Socialis. What was acheieved? Democracy? I restrain from raising my middle finger here. It achieved a destruction of democracy for a totalitarian PAP Parliament that lasted more than 10 years, took more than 20 years to rebuild into any semblance of token democratic representation and more than 30 years years to rebuild to into any semblance of national democratic representation.

Boycott? If you can't win, you boycott? If you lose, you boycott. If you're my son behaving like that, I'd rather strangle you by the jugular and surrender for death penalty.

I think the TS was talking about Myanmar situation and we cannot apply or confuse it to Singapore not in spite of the Barisan incident but the factors are different. Didn't NLD boycott 2011 and they still won 80% of the seats in 2012.

Boycott standing for election and boycott Parliament after elected are two different things. And yes, even drawing parallels, Burma and Singapore are two different countries.

Every party has a central figure; a figure which electorate could relate to when they think of the political party. For NLD, it's ASSK. What will happen to NLD after NSSK? I also wonder who is the central figure for PAP now. Old man LKY was the central figure.

I wonder did NSSK allow the plans to boycott their parliament.

Parliament would not be disrupted in any way because nobody gives a shit about GMS.

Please don't hurt GMS' feelings.

Please choose a better heading for this thread.
"OPPOSITION PLANS TO BOYCOTT PARLIAMENT" is a wrong one.
It causes unneccessary stress to forummers.
My mind went back to the period when Dr Lee Siew Choh and his Barisan Soicialis comrades walked out of Parliament.
Please use your titles carefully.
There may be people with weak hearts reading this article.
