Opposition is disunited, dispirited, and incapable of offering a credible alternative

Re: Opposition is disunited, dispirited, and incapable of offering a credible alterna

Not that I'm siding steffychun, but TRE is a fucked up website, mislead readers and instigate rumours.
Say what their owners are doctors and lawyers but no money to maintain the servers, ask for donations somemore...

TR is fucked. TRE is fucked. TOC is fucked. All these sound like SDP fuckers.

Never go to TOC before, so I no comment, LOL

and some how fools are gullible enough to donate to it.

TOC is marginally better than TRE. They dont spew vitrol rumours and do research some of their stuff. And during the PE, they were great in not endorsing any candidate.

Re: Opposition is disunited, dispirited, and incapable of offering a credible alterna

While opposition unity may be difficult in practice, I see no tangible benefit in 'killing off the weaker ones' since the weaker ones have no parliamentary seats at all. Unless of course, you see some intangible benefits which you would like to share with us.

It is probably not possible to "kill off the weaker ones" yet because WP is still not capable of challenging enough seats. But I see what happened to Desmond Lim at Punggol East SMC as a very positive thing, which should hopefully send the message to the other opposition parties to get out of WP's way wherever they want to contest, or face losing your deposit AND possibly handing the victory to the PAP.

Ideology vs parliamentary seats. It is cliché to say a 'chicken and egg' problem. Is it a better strategy to offer a consistent ideology or to secure parliamentary seats? One sustains the party 'spiritually' towards the same goal while the other sustains it financially. Our country's political system is unique because the opposition parties have been 'trying to get started' for many years, rely heavily on volunteers and could get little help from businesses operating in Singapore.

If the WP can show that they welcome high profile candidates to shape the party's belief system, perhaps that is not a bad idea either. SDP is working from a position of weakness with no parliamentary seats. It is also plain to say that the nuclear fallout effect of their history of civil obedience may have an adverse impact and overhang on their electoral performance. SDP seems to recognize this and tried overcome these by working harder to accommodate the ideologies of new credible candidates.

WP pretty much worked to get the parliamentary seats first, then try to use that to get better candidates. Step one is done, we'll have to see their candidate lineups in 2016 to see if they are able to attract more and better people having won a GRC.

SDP attracted candidates by pretty much saying, "With us, you have little chance of winning. But you can say whatever you like!"

Contrast this to the complete disarray that is NSP. No ideology. No parliamentary seats. No high profile candidates attracted by previous management to enter politics. Kenna Sai! (Note: Nearly all new candidates this election were defectors from RP)

Agree with you. NSP strikes me as the party to go to if you just want to be a candidate and you can't get along in another party.

SPP will go the way of the dodo if NCMP Lina Loh does not perform in parliament. If a merger with WP is possible...

Of all the possible mergers, I think SPP being merged into WP has the highest possibility, but I don't think it will happen until CST passes away. Ideology-wise, they are very similar, but I think it's the clash of egos that made it not possible.

SPP will unlikely merge. Chiam wanted to run his own game all the time. Unfortunately, he brought in Chee who backstabbed him and destroyed Chiam's SDP. SPP will forever be a Chiam party unless Ben Pwee takes over and proposes something.

Re: Opposition is disunited, dispirited, and incapable of offering a credible alterna

I think people now forget SDA which Chiam used it to unify the oppositions :D

Didn't work out too well, did it? CST may be good at winning elections as an opposition candidate, but it looks like he's not too capable of leading a political party.

SDA was a failed initiative. There isnt even a website

SDA needs a major overhaul with SPP pulling out b4 GE2011, it's left with 2 small parties. Perhaps a change in leadership should be considered, after Desmond Lim's Punggol East SMC humiliation.

Poor Chiam, his only high times was GE 1991 while his by-election strategy works and SDP won 3 seats.

And afterwards, Chee pushed him out and SDP lost its majority

SDP is gone by GE 1997 ..... until today the public perception of SDP is no good :(

And it will forever be so thanks to Chee et al

Not really, young people's perception of SDP should be good - they like this idea of rights etc. Youth like that kind of branding. But when go older, prefer that of WP or maybe even NSP as they know rights cannot eat one and want to hear about CPF, healthcare, HDB, things that SDP still very shallow at.

The youth only prefer NSP because of Nicole Seah. But she's not exactly bright.
