The most there are 30 names for NMP, and it's good news to see it drop from 48 (2006) to 46 (2009), because people are showing less interest in such political token posts.

And for the first time NMP applications are less that opposition candidates. That is good to know that people don't want back door seats.

Thats also too many. No people with integrity should apply for NMP LOL

there are now 6 real MPs and 3 NCMPs. The NMP post is redundant.

The People's Association (PA) confirmed two names - grassroots leader Sarjit Singh and heart surgeon Dr Tan Yong Seng.

Mr Singh is a member of the Central Singapore Community Development Council, while Dr Tan is chairman of the PA's Active Ageing Council and vice-chair of Whampoa Citizens' Consultative Committee........

Dr Tan felt NMPs play non-partisan role in Parliament. "More often than not when we debate on certain issues, maybe we hear the two views, the ruling party or the Opposition view. For the NMP, we can give the neutral view ... I think what we want is to bring out the honest view," he said

This Dr Tan is from PA and yet he claimed that he can give a '' Neutral view '' if he is nominated as an NMP.. PA = PAP.. Enough said..

Don't need to bother about what NMP scheme or who's in it anymore. We have real MPs and committed NCMPs in parliament. They went through the electoral process and have a mandate in terms of vote share/vote count. NMPs are just PAP approved voices to give outsiders the semblance that there are many alternative voices.

The best NMP was Siew Cum Hong. Reasoned, articulate, balanced, very incisive. He was also truly non-partisan when he took the mike, despite his obvious pro-oppo leanings on FB and in private life.

The rest, if you pardon my salty language, can just fuck off, fly kite.

After the election by merit of 9 opposition candidates who dare stand for elections, anyone who puts himself up as an NMP is either charlatan or an attention whore. I could understand in the past where the corridors of legislation was quiet but not now. Over the years, besides Siew, Kanwaljit Soin, and Walter Woon did well.

this doesn mean that some of those who dare stand for elections are not charlatan or an attention whore..... 1 of them even stand for 2 elections this year....

i also dispute the merit of 1 opposition candidate... she got in by connection...

can you imagine in 1991, LKY step down and let Kwa Geok Choo be PM ????
not forgetting that Kwa Geok Choo was infinitely more qualified than Lina Chiam now

she is no HIlary CLinton that is for sure

1 can be pro Opp but doesnt mean 1 have to be blind....

like to see NCMP and NMP systems downgraded to something like observer status in parliament - can participate in debates but no rights to vote or propose bills. this way NMP still bring more independent voices into parliament and only elected MPs do the law making.

This is because the local population is shrinking. You're lucky not of the nominees are from overseas.
