This situation is now quite common for certain types of specialists due to the hospital differentiation of patients. If you're are willing to pay as a private patient, the waiting time is very short even if you have a skin problem that can probably wait. However, if you are too poor and need subsidised care, they will make you wait even though it is more urgent.

Yap Angel
I totally understand the writer's problem... That time my dad was suspected to have Colon Cancer and desperately need to go for a scope to check, TTS next available timeslot for Colon Scope is 3 months later... Suspected of Cancer still let him wait for 3 months?! In the end, I have to check him into a private hospital and they straightaway arrange for the scope within a week! But, not everybody can afford this.

A reply to this letter by Angel Yap explained that her father suspected of cancer was asked to wait for 3 months to see a specialist. For cancer cases, the cancer can spread and go from stage I to III within months and early diagnosis is the difference between life and death. To save his life, the family went to a private hospital which is not possible for those who are poorer.

My neighbor once had severe joint pain and was given specialist letter by polyclinic. Quite serious doctor suspect bone cancer or joint infection. Neighbor does not speak English only Hokkien so ask me to make appointment for her at public hospital. This was the conversation:

ME : Hello, I want to make appointment for orthopedic specialist for a patient.
Operator : You're calling as private patient or subsidised patient.
ME : Class C patient.
Operator : Okay earliest 6 months time...in Aug.
ME: I never tell you her problem, how you know she can wait so long.
Operator : If you want earlier appointment, you have to come in as private patient.
ME: This is ridiculous, if cannot afford how?
Operator: Sorry sir, if you want earlier appointment, come as private patient.
ME: ...I need to check with patient to see if can afford....
<<<Hang up>>>

The neighbor said she very scare of high hospital bills and went to see Chinese sinseh instead luckily her problem went away...if something more serious most likely she might lose her life.

My husband has been seeing a general practitioner (GP) at Tampines Polyclinic for several years.

In early August, the GP decided my husband needed to see a renal specialist as a blood test showed that his condition was worsening.

We were shocked, however, to find out that the appointment date given by the Singapore General Hospital (SGH) was December next year.

After I called several times to plead and complain, it was moved up to August next year. Why does my husband have to wait nearly a year for his appointment?

Who is responsible if something happens to him in the meantime? Are our hospital staff so overworked that appointments have to be scheduled over a year in advance?

The SGH feedback department claimed that the reason for such a late date was that the GP did not request an urgent appointment.

Isn't it urgent enough if the GP decides that my husband needs to see a specialist and do a scan of his kidneys?

Surely polyclinics do not send patients to specialists for no good reason. This would be a first-time investigative check, and patients would worry over whether or not there is anything wrong with them.

Just because patients like my husband do not complain does not mean they are okay. The health authorities should appreciate such patients and not penalise them by putting them at the back of the queue.

the same in all first world countries public health care. maybe with exception of france.

This is called sinkie healthcare..only for those with money..this is also called the failure of the PAP govt who is fucking incompetent in giving affordable quality healthcare.

for the male patient, there's no time to waste if the boner is broken. :p

Just pay $250 for specialist consultation and maybe another $300 for scanning & medicine and you can get to see any specialist you choose today or tomorrow.

who did they vote for? :D

ha ha ha ha why she never call the recent health minister up, the FT workers have the minister number to call when needed why we SINgaporeans do not have?? hmmm!, the hospital should have given them Ang Yew Seng number or SINgapore casket number..just in case.

unfair comparison. public health care in many first world countries are heavily subsidised.
Why dont you compare in totality?
why dont you compare Health Minster salary in Singapore and USA and Australia? which health minister got the highest pay?
why dont you compare 1st world ambulance system?
why dont you compare the car price in USA and Singapore?

if some serious condition is disclosed in the scan at the private specialist, can the patient downgrade back to C or B class for treatment? or is the patient stuck as a private patient (A class?)

Tay soh hoon (ms)

ms tay,

if you want immediate attention, plse pay for it!

There are lots of private specialists available.

Stop complaining like a sinkie

if some serious condition is disclosed in the scan at the private specialist, can the patient downgrade back to c or b class for treatment? Or is the patient stuck as a private patient (a class?)

sinkies are real idiots!

First world country but 3rd world mindset.

Hasnt she heard of insurance before?

Truth is most sinkies would rather use the $$$ to buy house and car than to "waste it" on insurance; that is until something like this happens.

for the male patient, there's no time to waste if the boner is broken. :p

the boner is not a bone, it's a muscle, so it can be torn but not broken............................. :p

for moneyfaced cheebye sinkapore...no money no talk understand????

If Ms Tay Soh Hoon would cough up PRIVATE RATES at 're-structured' hospitals she would not only be given a specialists appointment within 1 WEEK..

She will even have a choice of which specialist she wants to see..

and be served with coffee, tea or Milo in a cosy 5 star environment when she visit that specialist!

So if the Sinkie do not have that sort of money to splurge on their medical problems..

the PAP will tell balless Sinkie of these types, who want subsidised treatment to ..

FUCK OFF and stop complaining!
