Emergency services were alerted to the crash on State Highway 25 in Pipiroa shortly before midnight.

A motorcyclist is dead after a midnight collision with a cow on a rural Waikato highway.

Police were initially called to reports of a cow on State Highway 25 in Pipiroa, near Thames, on Monday night.

But when officers arrived shortly before midnight, they came across the fatal collision, Waikato road policing Acting Inspector Rupert Friend said.

The motorcyclist died at the scene, police said in a statement.

The cow died, too.

The Serious Crash Unit is investigating the collision.

While information was still being gathered, it didn't appear there were any witnesses, Friend said.

It wasn't clear when or how the crash occurred, but is appeared to have happened after the call about the stray cow was made.

The road was closed for a short period overnight but has since opened.
