So what if you are a grad? Singapore doesn't owe you a living, neither does PAP.

You need to work hard on your own merit. If Minah is happy earning $1000 a month, who are you to say that she is not smart? .

If she has to draw $1,000 a month, what is the need to go and get a business degree? I could work as a security guard and get that amount.

So what if you are a grad? Singapore doesn't owe you a living, neither does PAP.

As a pretty front officer personnel Minah may hook one rich men one day, notwithstanding the small hotel she is working in at the moment.

Yeah. Just ike how I could hope to strike TOTO one day that'll make me rich beyond my dreams.

Oh also, btw, the wage difference between what should be her wage level, and her current one makes a big difference on the economy, in terms of the amount she saves, and the amount she can spend.

And low wage levels earned by young graduates will also discourage young people from forming families and having babies. After all, when you're earning (real) peanuts and having an unstable, dead-end job, you're more unlikely to marry, and form a nuclear family any time soon.

PAP has to realise this. Its pretty much almost their fault in the low birth rate- because of their insensitive labour policies that has social and economical side effects. Its most likely these policies will have a bigger negative impact on the Singapore economy in the next 2 decades at least.

Downgrade from what? She hadn't even started!!

From zero to zero is not downgrading.

many youngsters these days dont know hardship, brought up like kings and queens

Since the 70' LKYs has screwed Sporeans with his "stop at two" policy. It continued with the University grad mother is superior policy. Then his 'upgrade' policy drove prices sky high, until Sporeans have to be replaced because foreigners are "cheaper".

His policies already driving thousands out of Spore. When he goes, I don't think the PAP has decades but his legacy will haunt Spore for decades

The PAP will reach a point, sometime after LKY's death, on whether they must change course from what would be LKY's recommended course, or to stay the course. They don't acknowledge it now, but they will in time. I fear though because by that time, when its simply too obvious to ignore further, it could be irreversible.

After all, outside of Singapore, there are many economists who don't want to say much about how Singapore is managing the economy. They know, on the surface, Singapore is still a good country- which used to have great numbers- but they are skeptical on whether this model can be sustained in light of the new economy- also because of also more information coming out saying that good wages, basic respect and full employment are not just privileges, but requirements for a country to reach its full economical potential, in order to fully compete with the outside world.

Singapore is not doing either of the three I have mentioned above, and this will have harmful effects on Singapore. Singapore obviously will not prosper if more of its migrated workers are in Australia, contributing to the Australian economy, instead of being in Singapore.

LKY likes to say we are better than Malaysia and Indonesia, and India and China. But we are on a developed scale, and thus we cannot compare ourselves to beginners again.

Its like playing a video game. At first, you select 'easy' because its your first time. But after you become an expert on the 'easy' option after a while, can you develop yourself if you play easy forever? No. In the end, one has to go up and play "intermediate". And once you mastered that, you go to "advanced" level.

That's why while PAP has to be commended for bringing Singapore to its current levels, its clear it has fall short in trying to master the intermediate level. That's why the Parliament has to have more opposition MPs to ensure accountability, and transparency and to allow competition. Competition will ensure that the PAP is always on their toes, and it will make them become better and more responsive.

If not they will always be stuck on the 'easy' mode, and will eventually lose power once they are 500Ibs in weight, lazy, fat and always on 'sleep' mode, unable to respond even if they were to be attacked by a computer virus or trojan horse.

While LKY is reliving his 'Golden Years" what does the PAP expect Sporeans to do?

After LKY kicks the bucket there going to be alot of in-fighting before things settle down. May take months to years.

Spores is in a fine mess. For those who blindly supported the PAP hope you all suffer

She is obviously not suitable for the hotel industry. She is going to be disappointed because she's not going to make her way up from her $1,000 job, that is, if she gets it at all. Any hotel will know her actual intentions and if she's not suitable, she's not suitable.

BUSINESS graduate Noor Lilana, 23, is no longer looking for a management trainee position and a quick rise to the top rungs of the hospitality sector.

Instead, she is now prepared to accept a $1,000-a-month job working at the reception desk of a small hotel.

She had been looking for a job in the hotel industry since graduating from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in June last year.
In December, after being turned down repeatedly by hotels, she enrolled in a course for a certificate in hotel services.
She did so in the hope that when she finishes the course next month, she will be able to get a job in the hotel industry.

'Right now, it is okay for me to start at the bottom and earn $1,500, $1,000 even.
Some grads may disagree but in the long run, I am sure this move will pay off as I move up the ladder,' she says.

This give employers a good excuse to cut pay
and lower grads. wages.

More good years ahead.

If NUS grad can take 1k salary...i think minister should take 3k salary.
Afterall, itz recession period....if someone willingly to work 1/2 the pay and as hard as the minister.....should fire those elite ministers....

Especially the one ...Won't Kanna Sack.
He is overpaid and redundant.

Remembering a china girl told me that life in SG is fast and undeserving, some of us slog day and night working but at the end of the day cant see much visible saving. Firstly not every Tom dick or Harry earns 3k-5k or 10k in fact we see most of our fellow earning less than 2.5k is alarming. Very glooming sight as not only most of the single guys do not dare to date girls because they have so many fucking bills to pay. Where do they find times to date and enjoy life. The policy still encourage us to married and give birth. I think there were hinting to the professional group of people.

Your analysis is 15 to 20 years late. LKY's death will have little influence on the course of S'pore's economy. For the last 10 years, S'pore's economy is on a rudderless course. The PAP has run out of ideas a decade ago. they have no experience or real live knowledge on how to proceed under this changing world economy.

Many PAP insiders know this, but as u know there is a culture of fear and no one will tell the emperor that he has no clothes. The PAP's 5, 10, 20 years plans are out the window now. They are clutching at straws with things like IR, Casinos, importing FTs etc. Do u really thing such things are in any country's long range economic plans?

The Ministers and PAP arse kissers to the Lees all owe their positions not to ability and meriticracy, but to paper qualifications and allegiance to the Lee family. these people are not capable of pulling our economy out of trouble. The real people who run the ministries are the civil servants that report to this BG Rtds and ministers. But they are not creative and inventive enough to come out with the broad bold economic moves needed, and they need to cover their butts and not rock the boat .

In every country in the world, govts are holding extraordinary meetings, and doing drastic unheard of steps to right their economy, there is not even a peep from the PAP. The US has even elected a Black president, and the joint houses are throwing money at their industries. Even china is giving billion dollars to the poorest of its people. But in S'pore, its business at usual. More exhortations to greater efforts, more demands of greater sacrifices for its people, but PAP elites are business as usual.

After Kuan Yew's death, Gay Loong is too much of a buffoon to be taken seriously, there will be infighting in the PAP. And there will be no quick and fast solution, it will get worse.

Good idea. Ministerial pay is currently benchmarked against the top 8 earners of 6 professions (2/3 median). This kinda benchmark drives behaviour towards improving the situation for the big cats.

They need a component that's pegged to a basket of middle-class and lower income jobs. Then perhaps we'll see more activity to narrow the gap.
