SINGAPORE: The Nanyang Technological University (NTU) has unveiled an ambitious masterplan to transform its Yunnan Garden campus into a mini city in the next 15 years.
Key to the masterplan is a new Campus Centre that would form the heart of the university.
The centre, which would feature retail shops, cafes, and even a cinema, will be located alongside academic and residential facilities.
NTU said all this is to encourage interaction between staff and students.
There will also be a network of parks, ponds and pedestrian walkways, with roads served by electric buses and electric bicycles.
By 2014 a new medical school and research centre will be built and 5,000 new hostel spaces will follow a year later.
NTU said teaching is also set to change, with smaller classrooms and technology that emphasise interaction between lecturers and students.
There will also be a new focus on inter-disciplinary research.
NTU is Singapore's largest university campus with 33,000 students and 3,000 faculty staff and researchers from over 70 countries.
