Gardening plots to double by 2030; NParks distributes seeds to encourage growing of vegetables at home

SINGAPORE - The number of community plots for gardening enthusiasts will more than double by 2030.
The National Parks Board (NParks) is planning to have 3,000 community gardens and 3,000 allotment gardens in parks islandwide by 2030. There are currently more than 1,500 community gardens and 1,000 allotment gardens.
To encourage the public to grow vegetables at home, NParks launched an initiative on Thursday (June 18) that includes the distribution of free packets of leafy and fruited vegetable seeds.

Those interested in the seed packets can register for them on www.go.gov.sg/gardening-with-edibles from Thursday onwards.
The packets contain seeds for one type of leafy vegetable as well as one type of fruited vegetable, and instructions, in four languages, on how to plant them.
Members of the public can choose to grow vegetables such as Chinese cabbage, chye sim , kang kong, tomato, brinjal and lady's finger. All are commonly used in Singapore cuisine.


The seeds can be planted in egg trays to develop into seedlings before they are transplanted to pots.

The initiative, called "Gardening with Edibles", supports Singapore's "30 by 30" goal to produce 30 per cent of its nutritional needs by 2030.
The Republic currently imports over 90 per cent of its food supply.

What a stupid idea. They could reduce the food demand faster than the vegetables would grow by sending FTs home. Fewer mouths to feed makes the problem smaller. To be self-sufficient in food, you need about 20,000 ^m2 of land per person. A few pots of tomatoes or chillies is will do fuck all. This is just wayang.

For sure. Commercially grown stuff is bred for looks and easy handling/shipping, not for taste.

I used to grow veggies when I was younger. When nothing is ready for harvesting, you starve if you don't buy. Then, when everything is ready, you have too much and have to give away 9/10 of what you grow. Best way to get home grown veggies is to encourage your friends and neighbours to do it. You just stay at home, watch TV, and enjoy the free stuff you get!
