New Director-General of Singapore
Customs, Ng How Yue
ON 1ST APRIL 2003, Singapore Customs was formed to bring together the revenue enforcement and trade documentation functions of the Customs & Excise Department and International Enterprise Singapore into a single agency under the Ministry of Finance. Singapore Customs is headed by new Director-General Mr Ng How Yue. Mr Ng graduated from Imperial College, London, with a Bachelor Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
He joined the Civil Service in 1994 and has served in the Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Information and the Arts, before joining the Ministry of Finance in 1999. On 1 April 2001, Mr Ng was seconded from the Ministry of Finance to the then Customs and Excise department, and held various appointments before being appointed Director-General of Customs.
At the launch of Singapore Customs, Mr Ng gave an overview of the new role of Singapore Customs as a one-stop solution-provider for all customs and trade procedures. Mr Ng also outlined the department’s strategic direction for the coming years: “With the integration of trade regulatory processes within the Department, Singapore Customs must be able to respond faster and more effectively to its customers. We will do three main things—simplify rules, strengthen enforcement capabilities, and gear up for new trade requirements.”
