Praise the Lord for social media. In Singapore we have lost faith in the MSM as reports on government indiscretions, poor decisions made by incumbents and questionable practices or conduct are never reported or questioned by the local news media.
With social media, everyone with an average vocabulary and a digital device can become an armchair journalist. The downside is information is never cross-checked or backed by factual research which can be highly dangerous.
All said and done, without social media, the past perceived arrogance of Ng Chee Meng (NCM) as a former Education Minister and his now infamous photo with convicted money launderer Su Haijin would never have come to light. Plus added to this was his involvement as NTUC Secretary General in the recent Allianz- Income Insurance deal which was ultimately called off.
What baffles me was why was the former PM so impressed with NCM to want to make him a Cabinet minister immediately after GE2015. When he stepped down as Education Minister, he was made Minister in PMO between 2018 and 2020. Even when he was scalped in Sengkang GRC, he was made secretary general of the NTUC and even co-opted into the PAP’s Central Executive Committee in 2020, considered the party’s inner circle. The question is why is NCM so special?
He is a scholar and a former fighter pilot. Perhaps he is extremely bright and intelligent and he must have impressed PM Lee tremendously as a future prospect to serve a higher calling. Fighter pilots in the RSAF are known to be a cocky and an arrogant lot. I have mixed with many of them in my past career in the SAF. They are fond of thumbing their noses at transport and helicopter pilots who they view as bus drivers in the Airforce. Fighter pilots have always considered themselves a special breed of pilots.
I suppose PM Lee was impressed with this sharp cookie who is not only a scholar and a fighter jock as well. Vastly different from the many bespectacled or bookish type scholars in the army and navy. So here comes NCM, cocky, smart and impressive to the fore. He was made Air Force Chief and later Chief of Defence Forces.
I can’t say what improvements he made for the SAF during his tenure as CDF but he probably did not make any mistakes to warrant a close scrutiny of his character, personality and potential as a future political leader. I suppose PM Lee was not totally aware that military commanders and leaders have different skill sets which may not be totally suitable for political office. General Douglas MacArthur was a brilliant military leader and strategist but everyone knew he would have been disastrous as POTUS. So were many outstanding military commanders of past wars who would have failed miserably as politicians and government ministers.
It was already quite obvious that NCM was not well liked by his subordinates in the RSAF nor was he liked by many General Staff officers in Mindef who worked under him when he was CDF.
One of the best ways to know what makes a good leader is to ask their subordinates.
Most will tell you that a good leader is one that leads from the front, is able to work under pressure without transferring the heat onto their subordinates, is supportive and recognises their contribution to the cause, is not arrogant and does not simply bark orders and talks down to them.
A good leader listens and appreciates his subordinates. He is one who commands respect but does not demand it. A leader who believes in adherence to discipline and yet is a team player at the same time. One who galvanises his followers to achieve their goals with encouragement and leadership but not with threats and the use of the whip.
I gather NCM did not personify the above traits. Even in the Education Ministry he was not well liked as was elaborated in one discussion online. He was said to be high handed and spoke down to teachers who brought up problems. This was no different in the RSAF, where air force personnel were spoken down to on a number of occasions when issues and problems were brought up.
I am surprised that the then PM thought highly of him. But I should not have been, as a good friend of mine who is a former BG in the SAF said that he found NCM an easy person to get along with and had no trouble interacting with him in the SAF.
In my opinion, I think NCM is good with his superiors and contemporaries but falls short with those under him who he treats with a large dose of indifference and disdain.
The residents in Sengkang probably saw through him and voted untested and relatively unknown newbies in the elections in 2020. NCM failed to realise that in the SAF and the ministries he helmed, the staff gave in to him because he was their big boss. However, it cuts no ice with residents of Sengkang. They don’t owe you a living. If you are indifferent and uncaring, they’ll vote you out.
NCM got in by skin of his teeth in Jalan Kayu. He was up against a newcomer who was contesting the ward with next to no exposure to the constituency. He must have thanked his lucky stars that a large number of Jalan Kayu voters are die-hard PAP supporters who got him elected.
Even after he was elected, a petition got into full swing to garner signatories to prevent NCM from obtaining a cabinet post as many presumed that once elected he will be made Defence Minister. I don’t think this has happened before.
The question on everyone’s lips is why was LHL and LW so adamant in fielding NCM in GE2025. Many Singaporeans on the ground felt that he should have gone the way of George Yeo after he lost the Aljunied GRC. At least George Yeo was relatively well liked. He was smart enough to know the curtains were up and he moved on.
NCM seemed rather desperate to want to make it back into the fold. NCM has now publicly announced that he will request the PM not give him any position in the govt.
It certainly does not look good for the newly elected govt to be faced with such a problem.
I am curious to know what will LW’s next move be?
