Wrapping everyone up in cotton wool and sealing them in a glass bubble is not what life is all about.

Society is so concerned about risk nowadays that any deviation from the perceived normal is cause for a panic attack.

It's just bloody ridiculous.

the best way to not cause panic is to be upfront. providing misleading info, such as the 24hrs PSI is more accurate than hourly reading, is not helping.
It is causing all sorts of speculations and conspiracy theories and panic buying of masks. Especially if our close neighbour has reported much higher readings and declaring a state of emergency, it makes the situation worst. How does that help?

I think people, myself included, would want to have access to a set of accurate info so that they can decide what they want to do.

The bigger issue is perhaps that citizens have reached the stage where they are cynical about the information being sent out - selective use of employment figures arising from dubious classification, choice of time frames and particle size classification - and when one sees the New Paper and Sunday Times devoting pages to the issue, one cannot help but get the sense that THERE IS some fiddling, rightly or wrongly.

It is also interesting that the stories explaining the PSI measurements do not carry the names and emails of the reporters (all other haze stories do) - implying that they don't really want to elaborate.

If PM 2.5 particles are small enough to enter the blood stream, i am sure it can go through air con filters.

Instead of calming people, this data massage by NEA is adding to the fear and panic.

The rationale for doing this is not because they are worried about alarming the public. Rather it is because are they do want to issue a stop work order. They are worried that even if they don't issue a stop work order, workers will show up for work if the PSI is high. While they are safe and sung in their air con rooms with hepa filter air purifiers, they expect everyone else to carry on and not affect the all important GDP number.

This morning (20 Jun), Singaporeans woke up to even worse conditions as thick
haze blanketed the whole island. Everywhere, windows were shut yet people could
smell the smoke in their shuttered homes. Everywhere, people could hardly
breathe and were coughing away and sneezing to clear their lungs. People
complained of a general discomfort and those with sensitive skin complained of
itchiness. Some even slept the night before with an N95 mask on.

Despite all the physical and physiological evidence that things have turned
markedly worse, the NEA PSI reading for this morning showed an incredible
improvement to just 122 (8 am), 131 (9 am) and 153 (10 am) [Link]. This led Singaporeans to wonder if NEA grossly
understated its PSI readings.
