My friend says on Monday, many stalls in hawker centres and kopitiams will be closed already...

You can still buy groceries from most supermarkets over the CNY period. Some coffee shops and restaurants will be open, but be prepared to pay over the top prices and experience even worse shrinkflation when it comes to portion sizes.

It's the same thing every year. You're supposed to 'stock up' on your groceries prior to CNY, to tide you over when most of the shops are closed.

It's also the time period when hawkers selling halal and keling food can expect a temporary increase in business.

If you don't mind vegetarian food, this is always available. I heard they tend to put in extra effort when cooking during the CNY period.

Old people tell me that if we have money we must donate a bit and not go there to eat free food

The Huan Na and Keling stalls are sharpening their “knives” during this period. Eat at your own risk okay.

Malay and Indian hawkers will double their prices and/or shrink their portions to fleece those people who don't know how to cook.
