I always find it a bit strange whenever SM Goh talks about the need to look for new PM. He has done it TWICE, not just the recent one.

I mean, if you are the PM, looking for successor is your priority. But when someone else keep saying that we need to find new PM, how do you feel? It just means that someone is basically saying your time is up, we need to look for new PM!

Nobody during LKY time dare to utter those words that "We need to look for new PM". Even LKY himself did not say that. He just said in general, we need to carry out the renewal process.

Even when GCT was PM, no one talked about "we need to look for new PM". In fact, GCT himself even said that he was no seat warmer!

If these words are uttered by LKY himself, it is definitely understandable. But why would GCT keeps talking about looking for new PM? It really puzzles me.

I guarantee u that Gay Loong will stick around until Hongyi is in his 30's, than use the excuse that Old Goat was himself 38 years old when he became PM. Or was it 36? Forget already. Anyway, that's only 10 more years. Of course, a temporary seat warmer might be chosen ala Wooden.

Well if LHL is bringing in many new faces, the GCT is implicitly supporting LHL's choices. Of course, it could well be that amongst LHL's choices is one of GCT's own people.

There are consequences if LHL himself openly talks about the next PM at this stage, given he is only a few years into the job.

There is no need for GCT to openly talk about the next PM yet if he is planning on bringing in his own kakis. It would only beat the grass to alert the snakes. I see it as more as an indictment of the quality of LHL's leadership. GCT is basically saying, with a PM like you, we better talk about such things sooner rather than later......

Well, LKY just said that GCT wasn't his "First Choice", so to speak but he turned out to be a "popular" PM.

The so call "successor" to GCT was named but at various occassions, GCT has said he is no seat warmer.

This time round, it is hardly 5 years after LHL took over as PM when GCT started to say that we need to find a successor to LHL. This was first mentioned at the end of 2008. Immediately after that, the cabinet was reshuffled with Teo CH taking over as DPM.

Now, GCT means that there is no one in the present PAP cabinet who could take over as PM that is why the next PM has to come from the next elections of new candidates. So you have to figure out that someone "totally new" is supposed to be the next PM, not Teo CH nor WKS or anyone else.

All these things sound very strange to me indeed.

Teo is too close age wise. Ng is in the running but not very clear. Even before GCT became PM, LHL was already the likely candidate. It would have looked silly if anyone talked about a looking for a new PM then.

If race wasn't an issue, I think Tharman has the potential to make a good PM.
He has good qualities. Just my views. One of the few who deserves to be paid well coz he sure can make that amount of money in the private sector.

Agreed. I always wondered, though, if there's more than meets the eye in his OSA conviction. Either there's an interesting backstory to the conviction, or he really screwed up but was brilliant enough to make it back to the top despite it. Or perhaps the OSA thing was really no big deal anyway.

I am not sure whether LHL is bringing in many new faces but one thing I am sure now is that GCT thinks the PM needs to be replaced.

LHL has just opened his mouth to say that he is looking for a new team of leaders. Note, he didn't mention anything about Prime Minister.

Well, I do not think it is nice for GCT to talk about the quality of LHL's leadership. It may be the case that GCT wanted both ways, to tell LHL that he will have to step down soon and a new PM, probably his own kaki, will be found for next GE.

But the funny thing is this, we have many senior ministers in PAP now, some have served more than a decade but yet, GCT has implicitly implied that there is none suitable to take over as PM from LHL? How could one be sure that a fresh new guy who have not been in politics before, do better?

This really puzzles me. Are we abandoning the tested ones for those untested ones?

This is no dream. This is right from the horse mouth, talking about the need to look for the 4th PM for this GE. Renewal process is normal but it is not usual for someone else trying to push for it, except the PM himself.

No hypothesis, just plain and simple.
