Gan Eng Hoe, a Malaysian national, pleaded guilty last week to insulting the modesty of the 27-year-old woman at a Housing Board flat in the east earlier this year.
A district court heard that Gan was sharing the apartment with his girlfriend, the victim and her husband.
On April 29, the victim went to take a shower in the kitchen bathroom, which was separated from the toilet cubicle by a wall.
While in the shower, she saw something black peeking through a drain that connected the two cubicles. She immediately got dressed and noticed that the door to the toilet cubicle was locked.
She told her husband about the incident.
After repeated questioning, Gan confessed that he had used his digital camera to film the woman while she was showering. She reported him to the police the next day.
Gan's lawyer Adrian Wee said his client immediately surrendered his camera and laptop, which has since been destroyed.
Mr Wee said the victim accepted his client's apology and decided to let the matter rest. But her husband insisted on calling the police. Gan, who had a second similar charge considered, could have been jailed for up to a year and fined. ELENA CHONG
