SINGAPORE: Train services between Ang Mo Kio and Marina Bay stations were disrupted Saturday morning, in the third service breakdown this week for Singapore Mass Rapid Transit (SMRT).

In its latest update at about 10:00 am, SMRT said the northbound train service between Raffles Place and Jurong East stations is available.

The train service between Raffles Place and Toa Payoh stations is operating at reduced frequencies.

The northbound train service between Marina Bay and Raffles Place stations is not available.

The southbound train service from Toa Payoh to Marina Bay stations is not available.

Bus bridging service is available between Ang Mo Kio and Bishan stations, between Ang Mo Kio and Raffles Place stations, as well as between Marina Bay and City Hall stations.

Passengers on the affected stretches are advised to use alternative transport or take the bus bridging service.

Calls to the Channel NewsAsia hotline of the disruption of service started coming in at about 7.00 am.

One caller, Jeannie said that at about 6.50 am, she and other passengers who were in a train near City Hall MRT were asked to evacuate the train and had to walk along the tunnel after "the doors got stuck".

Another caller said at 7.21 am, when service on the North-South Line broke down towards Marina Bay, an announcement was made about the breakdown but no reason was given.

can't be help ,

SMRT tagline : Moving Forward Together.

have to slow down or pretend to break down , so the slower ones can catch up.

you know a lot of sinkies are left behind because they are slow.

some are slower , others slowest , got some slowerest and slowestest still. SMRT just have to stop and wait.

SINGAPORE: MRT revenue service on Sunday for the North South and East West Lines will only start at 10am, after checks on all trains and tracks.

Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew told a media conference on Saturday afternoon that the checks may not be completed in time for normal service to begin at 5.30am.

SMRT will run free parallel bus services from 5.30am to 10am.

Services for the Circle Line and North East Line will not be affected.

Mr Lui also said it's not necessary to conduct "thorough health checks" on the Circle Line and North East Line.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) will comb through the North South and East West system for "visual anomalies", after a seven-hour breakdown on Saturday, which is its third this week.

The disruption from 7.09am to 1.48pm happened after a third rail cover dislodged between Novena and Newton stations.

Three trains were immobilised at Dhoby Ghaut Station.

The fault is similar to the cause of the breakdown that led to commuter chaos on Thursday night.

In the service breakdown on Thursday, a misalignment between the special components - the train track and 'collector shoes' - that trains draw power from, had caused the fault.

Transport Minister Lui said there is some instability in the system and that the investigation will take time to complete.

He said this week's disruptions and tomorrow's change in schedule will cause inconvenience to commuters but stressed the need to conduct more thorough checks and pick up any incident that could be waiting to happen.

Mr Lui also shared his observations of the way SMRT handled on Saturday.

He said he took the train to Toa Payoh Station to see if the signages for affected passengers were adequate.

Mr Lui said the signs were good, while staff were helpful in giving information to those who needed help with the bus bridging services.

He also saw six buses in the queue for passengers.

Mr Lui also went to Newton Station and informed SMRT staff that more buses were needed.

He said they appeared "less prepared" at Newton and suggested that they plan ahead for an expected buildup so that they can quickly activate and clear the crowds.

Overall, Mr Lui noted an improvement, compared with the situation on Thursday night.

SINGAPORE: Train services between Marina Bay and Promenade stations along the Circle Line were disrupted on Thursday at 12.08pm.

SMRT said the problem was due to a signalling equipment on the track that failed, and is investigating the cause of the signalling fault.

Train services resumed 32 minutes later, at 12.40pm.

About 300 passengers were affected by the disruption.

SMRT provided free bus bridging services between the three affected stations during the disruption.

Passengers were also able to board bus service 106 at the bus stop outside Suntec City, and outside the entrance of Bayfront and Marina Bay station for free.

However, not many passengers were seen using the bus bridging services. The bus bridging services stopped at 1.35pm.

Announcements were made in all Circle Line stations and on affected trains to inform passengers of the disruption. Signs were also put up at the affected stations to inform passengers.

Staff were also deployed at these stations and in affected trains to guide passengers.

In addition, SMRT issued travel advisories through Twitter@smrt_singapore, radio stations and media to inform passengers of the service disruption and alternative transport arrangements including bus bridging services.

Singapore Civil Defence Force, the police and ambulance services were also informed of the disruption.

The Bayfront and Marina Bay stations officially began operations last Saturday. The two stations which link to the Promenade station, complete the Circle Line.

SMRT said train services between Dhoby Ghaut and HarbourFront were generally unaffected, as it introduced two loop services that plied between Dhoby Ghaut and Stadium stations and between Stadium and HarbourFront stations.

SMRT said this was to maintain the same service frequency, as trains plying between Promenade to Esplanade stations were travelling slower, for safety reasons.

Earlier this month, service for the Circle Line was delayed due to a signalling fault.

Passengers who were unable to complete their journeys due to the disruption can get a refund at the Passenger Service Centre in any SMRT station.

It will be a long long time before reliability problems can be rectified. Basically, after a long period of neglected inspection and preventive maintenance, it will take more than a COI and the CEO's resignation to repair things. Time and stress are the twin root causes of reliability failures. Systems fatigue, metal fatigue etc.

The problems will not be fixed, because:

1) Fixing costs money, and is not good for profit maximization.
2) The govt will not reduce the population, and the train infrastructure will still experience the same amount of stress.

What one sows, one shall also reap. The chickens have come home to roost.

From third world to first world and back to third world.

'First world' country is nothing more than a buzz word concocted by that Old Political Albatross in his memoirs, so he could take credit for taking Singapore 'from third world to first'.

Indeed. The truth is that Singapore is never a first world.
