There must be a core distinction between car ownership and usage. A separate PHV COE category is long overdue. The COE is supposed to control the overall car population to prevent a worsening of congestion, but PHVs have a greater impact on daily road conditions. Those who drive to and from work are on the road for about an hour; our cars are parked for 8-9 hours at the office. PHVs are plying our streets at all hours of the day and night.

Indeed the COEs should be classified with public transport like Taxi. Last time yellow black taxi are individual owned, own boss own use. Not rented
Some need to pick up old folks go kidney dialysis, run errands...Cars are essential with frequent breakdowns of public transport.

At the end of the day, only about 8% of the current population in S'pore may have a car or the whole island will become 1 big carpark. As such, those who cannot afford a car must make way for those who are able to. The govt should not be expected to make cars affordable to the masses. What will be next? Make landed homes and condos affordable to more than 15% of the residents in SG?

I am on the road for 60 minutes on a weekday - 30 minutes to my office and another 30 minutes back home. The roads in SG are clear except for peak hours, so employers should vary office hours like in my company where staff may report at any time from 7:30 to 9:30 am and dismiss between 5 to 7 pm. I arrive at 7:30 am w/o paying ERP and leave at 5 pm also w/o having to pay any toll fees. Traffic is relatively smooth both ways.

I share your frustrations as a young graduate from NUS who could not afford a car, but I worked hard, got promoted and invested prudently till I could afford a car by the age of 30, and have been driving for the past 25 years. Even now, I feel upset that I have to pay so much for a new car which goes to the obscene wages of our greedy politicians.

We all need affordable family car, for commuting, for leisure & not for doing business. Now where do we get our Swiss standard of living?

When I was a young father ferrying my children to their grandparents' house, kindergarten, primary school, clinic etc., I never considered my car a luxury, but a godsend on stormy mornings when the rain was relentless.
