Cultural diversity in ancient China

DR ONG Seh Hong (Marine Parade GRC) yesterday described how China's Tang dynasty thrived because of its openness to talent. We produce here an extract of his speech:
'A city with people from China, Japan, Korea, India, Vietnam, Persia, central Asia and many other parts of the world. Places of worship for Buddhism, Taoism, Islam, Christianity and Judaism.
Women with blonde hair and blue eyes working side by side with locals in taverns, serving drinks to and entertaining customers with songs and dances.
Is this Singapore? No. This was a scene from the city of Chang An during the Tang dynasty more than 1,400 years ago.
The Tang Dynasty was the golden age of Chinese culture and economic development. It produced two of the greatest poets in Chinese history. One of them, Li Bai, was born in a town in Kazakhstan. Some historians even believe Li Bai was not a Han Chinese but a foreigner.
Why did the Tang dynasty prosper? I believe it was partly because of its open-door policy and tolerant attitude.
Through the sea trade route and Silk Road, Tang not only benefited from doing business with the world but also gained many new technologies, cultural practices, contemporary items and new ideas.
The infusion of foreign influence enriched China for more than 300 years.
Singapore today is a cosmopolitan city. More than one million foreigners live in Singapore. They come with rich cultures and traditions of their own. I believe they add to the richness and vibrancy of our colourful and diverse multiculturalism...
Can we afford to close ourselves up?
Here is another lesson from Chinese history. China shut its doors in the Ming dynasty and remained so till the Qing dynasty. China ended up poorer for it.
The isolationist policy of the Ming dynasty condemned Khotan (a key trading oasis in Xinjiang) to the desert elements, eventually buried by the sand.
Hence, Mica needs to have a policy of enhancing and tapping on our cultural diversity. (By doing so) we would be the ideal place for the start of a cultural Renaissance for the region.

Photos: Is Ong Seh Hong residing in this condo?

It was reported in the Straits Times lately that PAP MP Dr Ong Seh Hong borrowed $60,000 from Ren Ci to pay off his staff housing loan from GIC before joining the charity.

Many Singaporeans are curious about Dr Ong’s residence. Where did he live in exactly? Why did he need to borrow so much money from GIC and Ren Ci?

We receive a tip-off from an anonymous source that Dr Ong may be staying in a condominium in the east under Marine Parade GRC:

$60,000 loan from Ren Ci to PAP MP Ong Seh Hong sparked furore in cyberspace

By sgkini090531f
$60,000 loan from Ren Ci to PAP MP Ong Seh Hong sparked furore in cyberspace
The Ren Ci fiasco took an unexpected twist today when it was revealed in the court by Ming Yi that he approved loans to several of its staff including is Chief Operating Officer Dr Ong Seh Hong who borrowed a stunning sum of $60,000. (read article here)
Dr Ong Seh Hong is the PAP MP for Kampong Ubi ward under Marine Parade GRC. He was in the spotlight lately over the Geylang Serai market food poisoning outbreak which took away the lives of two residents living in his constituency.
He has declined to comment on the matter on the grounds of the ongoing trial.
Within minutes of the news release on the Channelnewsasia online portal, the major internet chatrooms are abuzzed with the loan Dr Ong had taken from Ren Ci.
In less than a hour since the post first appeared on CNA forum, it has attracted over 2,000 views.
Many cannot understand why a doctor and a MP has to borrow money from a monk. Some questioned if the loan is interest-free.
Wrote “18″ on CNA forum:
“It is a public fund & not Ah Gong or your $$ cannot any how loan la… If it is a listed company, sure close shop one…..”
Another forumer remarked sarcastically:
“That some talent he has to borrow money from Monk – first world talent.”
ilfishing was more interested to know if the loan is interest-free:
“Is this interest-free loan? Good to know this fact, if yes, on what basis the loan is given to the MP?”
Scandals about PAP leaders are far and few because the mainstream media which is largely controlled by the government is not allowed to pry into their personal lives.
The scandal only came to light because of a trial hearing involving Ren Ci’s ex CEO Ming Yi who was falsifying the charity’s accounts and lying to the investigators.
As the second largest charity in Singapore after the National Kidney Foundation (NKF), Ren Ci runs a hospital and medical centers for the chronic sick.
It is funded almost entirely by public donations with occasional contributions from the Ministry of Health. Before his fall from grace, Ming Yi was a highly respected Buddhist monk in Singapore who risked his life in dangerous stunts including walking from a tightrope down from Suntec City a few years ago to raise funds for Ren Ci.
In the aftermath of the NKF saga, many Singaporeans will undoubtably feel hurt and betrayed by the dirt which has been dredged up in the Ren Ci case so far.
While there may be no criminal wrongdoings in Dr Ong taking a loan from Ren Ci, it is morally wrong for him to knowingly accept the money which is meant to help the needy patients. Neither is it good corporate practice for a staff to borrow money from the charity.
Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew has always praised the PAP MPs as the best talents Singapore can ever produce and therefore deserving of their exorbitant salaries which are fueling widespread resentment in the face of the current economic downturn.
Dr Ong will be hard pressed to a satisfactory explanation to the public about the loan which will probably sound the death knell for his unremarkable political career. It may also be his last term as a MP for Kampong Ubi given the impeccable record MM Lee demands from his MPs.

And look at what happened to the Tang dynasty and empire? Decadent, finished off and broken up. The chief beneficiary (at least culturally) of the so-called Tang golden era is Japan. They came, they learned, they brought it home and they kept it. Compare today's PRCs (so-called descendants of Han and Tang people as in 汉人 or 唐人) are no match for Japanese, who derived most of their much admired cultures from the Han and Tang golden eras in China. Japanese still acknowledge that and call their written characters kanji (meaning Chinese characters in Japanese).

There was also one incident which I witnessed, which is a bad reflection of the personality of a particular MP: Dr Ong Seh Hong. When he entered the chamber, he did the same thing as others, take a bow, and moved to his seat. As he was sitting down, I saw that he popped a candy into his mouth, and with a very fluid action, flicked his left hand towards the back of his seat. When his left hand returned to meet his right, I saw a clear wrapper sitting on the wooden platform behind his seat! About an hour later, I checked to see if the wrapper was still there, this time I think I saw 2 wrappers instead! So maybe that’s why camera phones are not allowed in the public gallery!

In every country there sure have a portion of foreigners around contributing to their respective society. There is no doubt that Singapore is doing the same thing and now most importantly, our great PAP government has heed the people's grievances over this issue and they have subsequently tightened up the regulations and criterias for the foreigners in Singapore. Well done PAP and 3 cheers for our great PAP and the people of Singapore.

This Ong chap is really a cheebye mouth. It may be true that the tangs openly welcomed foreigners into their country. But this is not the case with the PAP and Singapore. The PAP is not openly inviting muslims or malays for PRs and citizenships, for example. I don't think blacks are that welcomed either.
