Thankfully, she will make a recovery despite some severe injuries:

'Please call my husband, I'm injured'
Woman hit by motorcycle managed to whisper spouse's mobile number

Published on Dec 27, 2012, ST
By Bryna Singh

WHEN the motorcycle struck, it left her with broken ribs, a fractured hip and a punctured bladder.

But as the injured pedestrian lay bleeding, she managed to whisper something vital - her husband's mobile phone number.

And after a passer-by gave him a call, he arrived just in time to climb inside the ambulance and comfort her on the way to hospital.

"She kept uttering, 'It hurts, it hurts' and there were cuts all over her legs," recalled the husband, Mr G.K. Ang.

His 46-year-old wife - an accounts clerk who wanted to be known only as Mrs Ang - was knocked down by the motorcycle while walking across a pedestrian crossing with the lights in her favour last Saturday morning.

Since then, footage of the accident from a camera inside a nearby vehicle has gone viral after it was posted on citizen journalism website Stomp.

Mr Ang, who works as a technician, told The Straits Times that he was asleep when he received the call from the passer-by. The 45-year-old rushed to the scene on Woodlands Avenue, about two bus stops away from his home.

He then clambered into the ambulance to be beside his wife during her journey to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, where she underwent a bladder operation.

Mr Ang said she is now conscious and recovering from the operation, while she awaits surgery on her hip.

He added that the mother of two had been deeply traumatised by what happened to her.

"She does not want to talk about it, or see the video clip of the accident," he said. "When she thinks about it, she starts trembling."

The 12-second video has been viewed around 49,000 times since it was posted on Christmas Day. It shows how the collision sent Mrs Ang flying, along with her handbag and another item, which her husband said was a Christmas present meant for an office gift exchange.

The clip ends with the injured pedestrian lying in a foetal position in the middle of the junction.

Mr Ang said she had been crossing the road at the same traffic light for more than 10 years while on her way to work.

But at about 6am on that fateful day, her routine was cut short when the motorcyclist apparently beat the red light and knocked her down from her right.

Following the bladder operation, Mrs Ang became very agitated, said her husband.

"She was heavily sedated and could hardly move, so she panicked and feared the worst about her condition," he added.

"After I watched the video clip, I too was very worried about what might have happened to her."

But she has cheered up considerably after doctors said that there was no permanent damage to her brain or vital organs, said Mr Ang.

The couple have a daughter, 12, and a son, 14.

"I now tell my wife to be strong and to focus on getting well," said Mr Ang.

"Our family is just glad she is alive."

A hospital spokesman said Mrs Ang is in a stable condition, and recovering.

The police said that the motorcyclist, who is in his 20s, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of dangerous driving.

Investigations are ongoing.

correct. don't care right of way or not, important thing is be safe. fuck rights as rights no use if already knocked down by car or bike. pedestrians and esp those recreational cyclists with their sporty bikes should get their heads screwed right.

lianbeng adds: some dun even bother to wait for green man - they just start walking even running when no vehicle.:D

From the very beginning, i have always said that we take road safety for granted and many are just waiting for accidents to happen. Too many are busily SMSing, talking away and especially on their phones when crossing the road or running across the last minute. Blissfully unaware that the quality of those driving deadly machines have changed considerably and subject to change under influence of drugs/drink and lack of sleep.

They still don't realise "Personal Forcefield" or "Emergency Barriers" are still not yet invented and downloadable as an app on their smart phones. These features are unfortunately still not available. One time, saw an auntie using an umbrella in the direction of incoming traffic while running across red light. She couldn't have seen any cars as the umbrella blocked her view as she was using it to shield her skin from the sun. She must have figured the umbrella is made of ballistics/HRM/depleted uranium/reactive armour material and would shield her or something. Why would one cross a road and not look is pretty amazing. Road safety awareness is simply not there as many assume ALL drivers would drive safely just because they think all drivers are afraid they will get into trouble.

Most of them even look at the opposite way of incoming traffic as if daring the cars and motorcycles to ram them while talking on their phones/SMS/Tweeting/Facebook.

Worse, the drivers themselves may be doing that as well. Two wrongs don't make a right in this case, they make an accident. Assuming the other chap in a fast moving, 1/2 tonne vehicle see you and stop in time as you are crossing the road texting? Don't bet on it.

If they rammed into you, even with the light in your favour, so what if they are in the wrong and get fined, demerit points or go to jail? You are the one languishing in a hospital ward or even the morgue tonight. They get jailed at most and still get a 2nd chance at life a few days/months/years later, you and your family are the ones who may suffer for the rest of your life if you are crippled or worse.

Like someone always pointed out to me, if a motorcylist is in the right but gets his legs amputated because of an errant truck driver, even with the truck driver jailed and insurance payout coming, it is cold comfort to the victim as he would faced being handicapped for the rest of his life.

So many walk the zebra crossings and traffic lights assuming the drivers see them or would stop for them, even dashing across when the lights has changed nonchalently. All it takes is for one driver to be drunk/texting/dozing off/facebooking/tweeting/playing games/watching videos/watching ladies/not paying attention/bochup/bad mood to spoil your day/week/month/years/life permanently.

Ones life in exchange for someone to get fined/demerit points/revoking of license/jail? Not worth it. Treasure your life, its just not worth it. That phone call, SMS, tweet can wait until you cross the road, your life is far more precious. I know my message sounds harsh but i hope some reading it can take it seriously.

No one is going to think you are suave/smart/cool/pretty if you run across the road and beat the cars that are trying to beat the lights or flash your newest smartphone while walking across the road. With an increasing uncaring society, few would be willing to be the witness or help if you are lying helpless on the floor, your body/limbs/latest smart phone smashed.

If you can't treasure your life, at least treasure your smart phone enough to look while crossing the road/zebra crossing.

Accidents are like wars, they don't determine who is right, they determine who is left.

Note that the green man light already lit for quite sometime and the accident occurred on the middle lane, and not the left most lane. Most people will still look at on coming traffic while crossing the traffic junction. But they will only look during the first few steps, afterwhich people will continue walking without checking further.

It is like driving, you don't usually look left and right when you are already driving in the middle of the junction, because experience tells you that the perpendicular traffic would have come to complete stop by now.

The DPP should charge this rider for attempted manslaughter. The police and public prosecutor have been too lenient on punishing errant drivers, maybe because in the past too many of elites were caught causing road accidents.

Hopefully, now with video capturing in almost all taxis and many cars, the public pressure will result in tougher punishment.
